Lowrance Losing Depth Reading

Out of the blue, I started having problems with my Lowrance losing its depth reading. I’ve been running this boat now for 4 years and never had a problem. The other morning it was real cold out and the water was calm; I didn’t want to freeze my partner, so made a ten mile run at around 45 mph. It was a smooth easy run and I had no problems with the depth reading. Later in the day, it warmed up so I was able to run the boat at higher speeds; Sure enough, I lost my depth reading. It seems whenever I get in rough water or at higher speeds I lose bottom contact and the unit shows me in about 4 feet of water and stays there. The only way to reset it, is to power it down. When it powers back up, the unit is reading properly. What could be causing this? Thanks.

I had an older one (2004) that started doing that. The problem was intermittent at first, but eventually it quit reading depth all together. I ended up replacing the unit. I tried a different transducer and the problem remained. Which led me to believe the problem was in the unit itself. It could easily be the transducer delaminating from the hull. They dont read well with air below the puck. Pour about a gallon of water into the bilge the night before. You want enough for the air to leave, but not enough to kick on the bilge pump. See if the problem continues.If the problem continues – your transducer is probably going bad and needs to be replaced. If the problem stops – pop it loose in the bilge and re-epoxy the puck.

It is usually separation inside the puck and air, and it can also be moisture between the puck and hull in the bonding agent.
