Outboard engine manufacturers have rules and regulations that they must follow by law. So a 250 hp outboard is just that. While you may see some different performance throughout the rpm range all of them are going to perform similarly. I know nothing of honda outboards but Im willing to bet blind folded and with ear plugs in if you rode in the same boat but had each outboard manufacturers 4 stroke engine on it you couldnt tell which one was which. Most people choose a specific brand based on personal preference and available service.
I ran a 225 on my latest Cougar. LOVED IT!! My next Cat I will purchase, will have another. It was very nice to run down the lake and still be able to talk to a passenger. It was not as fast as the others, but I would not trade it for anything else. I may be biased, but I have owned all the others and this is my number 1 to me.
I would hardly say all 4 strokes the same. Suzuki 4 stroke has 2:01 case and performance no where near the SHO because of it. A 30 fury a little hard to find..lol. Now if Suzuki made a 1.86, that would be an entirelydifferent discussion altogether. But they dont so…ifs and buts and candy nuts and all.As for two stroke “others”, only the SHO runs with the two strokes in terms of speed. To me I just cant see owning anything other than one of the “big two”(Merc and Yamaha) in terms of speed, reliability, and ease of repair. There will be those that evinrude works well for them too but those are fewer. So like Chet below I hardly feel that its 6 of one half dozen of the other. Fireman, what was your best speed with the 225. Hole shot acceptable. Anyone ever run a 250?

Although I have never owned a honda marine motor, I do like them and would be proud to hang one off my cat.

Yes I undrestand displacement isnt the same on all of the engines… My point is that 250 HP is just that 250 HP. The manufacturer cant say an engine is 250 HP unless its producing 250 HP. Gear ratio is obviously going to make a difference. So you guys are telling me that if you rode in a boat without looking at the engine and ears plugged you could say that was the Yammi this is a Verado and this is a Honda?
ABSOLUTELY !One growls, one purrs, and one screams.btw, the Zuki I believe is 2.08:1 ratio, and would probably sling a 32p prop ! Sorry for the horrible post, but my choice is always to buy American when possible. That being said, if I were to consider the others Ive owned some of all the above products, and they are all great engines, although I think Suzuki is a bit more performance minded in their offering, if you can get a prop !
