Testing Props on Yamaha 175 HPDI

I have now ran three different props on my 08 Classic and Yamaha 175 HPDI. With the Yamaha 25M, 25P 14 3/4″ , two people and 3/4 tank of gas, my best run was 64.5 at 5200 RPM. With the Mercury Fury, 24P 14 3/4″, one person, about 1/2 tank of gas, my best run was 66 MPH at 5400 RPM. With the Mercury Trophy +, 4 blade, 23 Pitch and 13 3/4″, two people, just over 1/2 Tank of gas, my best run was 63.5 at 58-5900 RPM. I tried to make runs in both directions to adjust for the tide. I felt like the Trophy over reved one time on the hole shot. It has the large “O” rings installed. There is not a big difference in the hole shots, but I think the Fury had the best hole shot, as well as top speed. Since I did not get any chime walk, I may not be being agressive enough. My motor limits at 6200 RPM. I am going to try to find someone that runs top speed a lot and see if he can do better. I was at a small disadvantge as I could only feel the trim up and down. The meter is zeroing in mid range and therefore, I cant tell how much I am up or down. I had to go by seat feel. I wonder if the Fury, turning 5400 would be easier on my motor than the Trophy turning in its higher RPM range. I know that I dont normally run much over 50 MPH when I am fishing. I just want the most efficient prop for the Yamaha motor and the Classic. When I was making my runs, I could feel a little pull on the steering wheel, so I might have been able to trrim up some more or lift the hyd. jack. Skipjack, It sounds like youve run the gammit and tried the best options. The selection of propeller is one of choice and your preference. The venting on hole shot could be tweaked with smaller PVS plugs also.

I agree, it is down to my choice. My grandson will be home this weekend and he and I are going to make another run and choose one of these props. The four blade has the large hole plugs and I think the medium would be better one for the hole shot and I will do that if we go with the Trophy. The Trophy got my RPMs up to where I wanted it to be, 58-5900 RPMs. My best speed was with the 24 Fury, so we are going to give these two one more try and then choose. Thanks for the input. Skipjack

The Fury did give you your best speed, though it was with different circumstances, for testing purposes, try to run under the same conditions and weight. You had two in the boat for two props, but on the fury, you only had one person. Either way those are good numbers for the 175 on the classic

I have a 2002 classic with 2002 yamaha 200. I know this is a different circumstance, but I have a classic with yamaha experience. I have tried a few different props also. I have tried the 25M, 25 trophy, and 25 tempest. With identical circumstances, the 25M runs the best on my boat. The 25 trophy does have a better holeshot, but loses a couple mph on the top end. I have not tried the fury prop, but you need to compare identical situations when testing props. As mentioned above, when you tested the fury, you had one person and less fuel. That alone could account for the 1.5 mph increase in top speed. I would think that the 25M or maybe fury would be your best option. But, for me, its hard to beat that 25M on my boat. DPT2005 What kind of speed are you getting with the 25M on your 200 Yamaha? On the 200, I think you might turn up more RPMs than I am getting with the 25M on my 175 Yamaha. The Fury is a 24P and I am turning 200 more RPMs, 5200/5400. The 175 specs call for 6200 on the top end, more that the 150HP. Your 200 is a bigger motor, but I did not look to see what the max RPMs are speced, but the 25M on your motor must get more than 5200. Do you have any chime walking? The 23P Trophy, smaller diameter, turned up-to 5900, with two people. My son weighs about 165 LBs. That may be one reason the speed was off a little. I am sure I have at least if not more than adverage, fishing stuff in my boat too. When my grandson works with me, we will be trying the two props with the same conditions. He measured the jack plate setting and set it for 4 inches, and with that setting, the meter was at 3/4 range. I have not ran the jack plate that high on the meter yet. It will be interesting to run both props under the exact same conditions on the same day. Skipjack

I can get my rig to hit 70 with two people or 71 by myself. I do not claim to be the best driver in the world either. Mine will start to chine walk at about 66 mph, but I can get it up to 70 or so safely. My motor is not supposed to turn more than 5500 RPM, and I can only get it to 5400 with any of the props I mentioned. Im sure I could do a little better if I had better driving skills. I could also probably do a little better if I was testing it now in the colder temperatures, but most of my speed runs have been on very warm summer days.
