gas leak?

Anybody ever have a noticable gas smell in all the compartments of their boats? Especially the rod lockers? I read in a past post about overfilling the fuel tanks, but thats definately not my problem because the tanks are near empty with no change in the smell.

It is permeation of the fuel tanks from the fuel. The plastic tanks vent through the side walls. There is minimum amount of permeation through the cell structure. The tanks may be leaking through a gasket on top of the fuel sender, though it often is just permeation. This began to get worse about 5 years ago. It may be fuel additives and it may be other issues. Take a look for a small leaking gasket or hose, though we think it is more than likely permeation. Though give your boat a once over and check it well for actual gasoline to be sure it is not a leak. We would like to know your year, model and fuel capacity.BCB

Its an 06 puma with a 32 and two 10s. Ive never been able to find any actual gas in the bilge or anywhere, just a fairly strong smell. Sounds like it may just be a normal problem and not a “leak”.

Hydrogen Gasses (when charging) and Permeation are two primary reasons we do not extend the charging plugs to receptacles on the outside of the boat. As convenient as these are, they are also a hazard. BCB

Mine does the same thing, just residual odors from as BCB stated, I just open that rod box every so often and let it air out!!SAMBAYOU BANDIT

This probably does not apply to you.I had a boat with a gas odor. I traced it down to a leak in the filler hose where it ran between compartments.Since it was the filler hose it “vented” causing the smell.Tim
