Merc throttle/Gear Shift hung in Forward gear

OK is this bad or an easy fix?? While fishing this weekend up at Table Rock the Gear shift hung in forward. After about 20 minutes for working on it I still could not get it to come loose. Now it will not start (Safety switch I suppose) I had to troll back 3 miles to were my truck was parked. When I went to come off pad the boat slowed like normal (hot foot), but when I went to pull it out of gear and put it in neutral it would not release back. It wasnt a total lost I caught one that weighed 5.25lbs on the way back. Thanks

You might pull the cowling and see if the linkeage is still in its craddle. I had mine come off on my last boat and stuck in gear but the shifter would move forward and back just would not come out of gear. I pulled the cowling and found my linkeage off of the mount. Mine was a quick fix hope yours is too. The nuetral saftey switch is in the shifter housing beside you when you drive. Problem might be in that. Best I can offer with out being there.
