Smartcraft – “water in fuel” alarm

So, I ran my Puma yesterday for about 25 miles until there were about 10 gallons of gas left in the main tank and I was at the the ramp at which point Smartcraft provided me witht the “Water in Fuel” alarm. I shut the motor down and started it back up to put the boat on the trailer and did not get the alarm. This morning I filled the main tank until it was full and added the appropriate amount of Mercurys Dri-Fuel. I ran 12 miles this morning with no alarms. Following the 12 mile run, the “water in fuel” alarm once again appeared. I shut the motor down and started it up, like the previous day, but this time I got the alarm. Fortunately,. there was gas in my saddle tanks thus I made the run back to the ramp on that source of fuel. I shut down about a mile from ramp and switched back to the main tank and did not get the alarm (of course it is possible this was not a far enough run to really tap into the main tank). Thinking this may be the case, I left the motor running while I went to get the truck, etc. The alarm did not reappear. Any thoughts to ease my mind between now and when I talk to my mechanic tomorrow.

We are not sure how well the Dri Fuel works, though you should check the fuel filters on the engine for water. We would think that the Dri Fuel would cleanse that area, though it is obvious that you have graciously been the receiver from a anonymous fuel station with some water. It would appear that you got more than the Dri Fuel would take out also. If you are really concerned about the moisture, you can remove the hose at the valve on the rear. Siphon the fuel out until you either find out there is no water, or drain it all. The sensor is on the engine, so the moisture has to be developing in the filter there.Pop the filter and then check that area first. BCB

I had the same problem. If this is an OPTI, pull the engine cover. On the right side is a silver cover box, at the bottom is a black small hose connected to to male ends at the bottom of the box. This is your gas vaporizing unit. Disconnect the bottom hose at one end, turn the set screw which opens a passage way for gas to drain out of the gas vaporizer chamber. Drain it into a cup and check for water. On my 200 Opti the water sensor is on the left chamber and this is what kept setting off my alarm. Check both sides.When done pump your tank bulb to refill the chambers.Note I was told that if your gas has a lot of ethenol in it, it tends to collect water if it sits for any period of time. The ethonal gas is what was causing my problem.
