I would suggest you try a Tempest 23.
Our suggestion would be from knowledge and not experience. We have not run your application and this is the first we have heard of with a 175 Johnson on a P3.First lets suggest a 24 Raker. Next a 25 Shooter, Last a 22-23 Renegade. That is where we would start. BCB
I have a 2002 Saber that has a 150 xr6 with a 4 blade 24 pitch older model trophy. It has good top end speed but a slow hole shot with 2 people. I recently ran a 23 pitch 4 blade PowerTech and had good results. Does any one have a powertech 4 blade 23 pitch prop they would like to trade for a 4 blade 24 pitch trophy? Does any one else have another prop they suggest I try?
Ed,We would suggest you try to stick with a 25 Pro Series Yamaha Prop. Though some have like a 24 or 25 Tempest. The Trophy is a nice wheel though the Yamaha dopesnt always like the exhaust restriction of a Trophy, thus the poorer hole shot. On an older motor and boat, we really can only direct you as we would try things. There are too many variables. BCB
I have a 2003 sabre with 150 xr6 and am running a modified 23 tempest on a 6 in plate about 2 inches under pad for just me and 2.25 under for tourny load. Boat will gps at 67 with just me and 64 tourny load. hole shot is great running med plugs in the prop. Steve at keystone propeller reworked my prop for me.What speed are you seeing as I have thought about trying a 24 pitch power tech as I am turning 5800 rpms with the 23. having my current prop reworked was a better deal than buying new, the difference a good prop man can make is incredible and at $250 affordable too.
I have not GPS my speed. My speedometer says 65-67 with just me and 65 with some one else in the boat. This is about 5600 rpm. I may can work a trade for a tempest plus which is actually what my boat is rated for in the books. Why did you have yours worked. How did it perform out of the box?
out of the box i had to run the motor higher on the plate to achieve the speed I was looking for and even then I was only getting 66, and running marginal water pressure. I wanted a little more stern lift so I had the tempest reworked. Steve put some cup in the tips and did a polish job on it. Huge difference in alot of areas one being water pressure, not sure why but I am able to run motor even higher on plate and maintain better water pressure. Hole shot was okay but not great after rework hole shot is incredible. I am determined to get this rig up to 70 without modifing the motor. May be a unrealistic dream but it gives me something to play with. Out of the box tempest have a lot of bow lift and I wanted more stern lift without going to a 4 blade.by the way when my spedo was working it would register around 75 when the gps was at 66, so I just plugged the spedo hole and use the gps to measure the efects of my adjustments. I am next going to try a unmodified 24 and see what it does to my rpms it should put me right back down to 5600 and gain me some more speed.

You still need vents in your prop for proper take off
Your engine appears to be too high on the plate if you are turning 6100 rpms. Lower it about 1/2″ and see what you get. BCB
I have a 8″ detwiler plate on it . Do I position the jack plate and then trim the motor or just the opposite. Inother words get my rpms right with jack plate then trim for speed .
It is not that simple, as if you have a hydraulic plate, everything will change some. The engine is definitely too high as you are running it. Our first mission would be to lower it if you have manual, or tweak it down some from where you are running it if you have hydraulic. The set up is a combination of the right height first, then the proper trim angle. The RPM on a 25″ should be in the 5850 to 6,000 range on that plate. This will vary on each rig. The speed can be calculated by using a propeller formula and if you are not hitting that speed, then you are probably either too high, or have a bad propeller. BCB
Anytime a prop is worked on it can (especially if done by a backyard mechanic) affect performance so you might not be getting what a “good” Trophy could give you. A Trophy is a little more sluggish out of the hole as the Tempest on most applications I have ran them on. But sometimes the top end and stability at WOT is worth that trade off on the holeshot. I dont have a scientific reason it is just my experience. If I am remembering correctly it seems on that rig it is almost 50/50 on what people are running between the Tempest and Trophy. Pick which one you like and run it. I am sure BCB will be along to give you their recommendation. Judd Lasiter
We have always suggest a 24 Tempest on this set up. You can also run a 25 Tempest, though it will be a tad slower, and it might keep you off the rev limiter in cooler weather. BCB
I agree w/BCB…. I am running a similar set up in a Classic. I am a fishing guide and keep the boat loaded often w/3people….only when I fill the live wells will it act a little slow getting on plane….Sounds like your prop is Buggered up rather than Bogered…… GHCpt.Gary Harlan (Harlo) USCG Liscd Fishing Guide Tishomingo, MS Roger Stegalls Professional Guide Service Sponsors: BassCat (of course!), Strike King, Falcon Graphite Rods, Gary Yammamoto Custom Baits
