Gas Gauge Adjustment

Is there any way to adjust the reading on the gas guage? I have a 26 gallon tank and at dead empty on the guage it only takes 18-19 gallons until it tries to overfill. At half tank reading it will only take about 9 gallons.

This seems to be a common problem with boats. I have owned a dozen or more boats in my life and none had very accurate gas gauges. IMO there should be a solution to that problem.Dan

Yeah all mine in the past have too. I always just lived with it but I guess its this new style ventless tank, if you think you have 5 or 6 gallons to go and it catches you offguard pumping fast, it will shoot a 2 foot spray fountain all over the place with zero warning…I cant even hear it getting close like I could on all my other boats. Owens484—be glad it goes that way and not the other. About 2 months ago my gauge showed 1/4 tank and just quit on me. I thought something was out of whack with the motor or fuel line or something BUT NO WAY was it out of gas. I called my local wrench and he said and I quote ” Tony, I hate to ask this but have you checked the gas tank?” I was insulted that he question my intelligence……I got over it quick after I filled up that tank and it ran just fine again. Mine too. 2013 Cougar AE and one tank never gets below 3/4 tank even when empty. I wouldnt worry about it if I could see what was in the tank. Dang it!

Any suggestions from BCB? Is there a better sending unit that we can get ahold of or any way to fix/adjust these things? Or should I call my dealer and just get it warrantied? It wouldnt bother me if I could see through the tank. Its hard not to worry when I see my guage at under 1/4 tank, and am 20 miles from the ramp…but Im “pretty sure” I have at least 15 gallons left, but not positive. It has gotten annoying to deal with and worry about all the time.

Odds are its the FLVV which is shutting fuel off prematurely to some degree, and possibly a 2 to 4 gallon gauge lag together. The EPA valves have some variance and they shut off fuel differently depending on the angles. This is not a historic problem most are familiar with. The sending unit in your tank is a WEMA sender and they are generally very accurate. The gauge itself would be our most potential variable. These EPA shut offs belch fuel when there may be 10% air space inside the tank. We had an issue with Yar-Craft tanks that some were running appx. 20% short on fuel and required new FLVV assemblies. Jack the nose way up and they would fill. Of course someone figured out you could jam a funnel in the neck and override the new valves, where theres a will…

I cant speak about the newer environmentally friendly fuel tanks , but for the most part boat gas tanks do not have any sort of baffle system to prevent fuel slosh , which there is a lot of in a boat . — some gauge adjustment can be made by removing and CAREFULLY bending the float arm on the sending unit , but you need to be careful about it so you dont damage the sender . — Hoss

This is a recent model and newer WEMA sending units operate on a magnetic sensor and not a float arm. There is a magnet in the donut float that travels vertically along a 1/2″ shaft and activates the signal to the analog output. There are no moving parts on this other than the float itself. Yep, new complex stuff. Yep, Costs more too!
