Oil leaking

The oil pump recently went on my 2013 250 Pro XS and had it replaced. There was a pretty good pool of oil inside the cowl, which the technician cleaned up. I’ve only used the boat 2X since having the pump replaced and both times after parking the rig with motor trimmed down a day or 2 later I’m seeing DFI oil that’s ran down the lower unit to the end of the skag. We called the tech right away the first time and we checked the lower unit oil which was good, no water. This is definitely DFI oil. It originally looked like like the oil was coming out of the hole at the top of the lower unit on the port side, but today i can’t really figure out where it’s coming from. The tech thought that it’s likely just dfi oil from the faulty pump finding its way and taking the path of least resistance which is down. Does this make sense and has anyone else experienced this? Got an event next week and wanna be sure something isn’t going on. Thanks in advance

First, It could be residual oil left over from the leak. Did you put it in the water and run it after the pump was replaced? If not, oil can be trapped at several points in the lower cowl, mid-section, etc. Second, if you did run it, you might eyeball the pump. You can generally see a drop or two of oil hanging on the lower side near the lowest screw. If so, it is leaking again. You might try an allen wrench (I think that is what was used) and make sure the three screws are tight. If not, that might fix it quickly…

my 09 leaked oil the same way and it was the small 1/8″ tubing that came off under the cowl. check ALL hoses under the cowl with a slight tug to make sure they are secure. it cost me an insurance claim by a supposed “GREAT” dealer in LR.

If not, that might fix it quickly…Yes I did run it for a tournament immediately after the pump was replaced. There is no oil at all inside the cowl.

I had what I thought was LU oil leaking out that same tiny port just in front of the bolt on the port side, and down the skeg. Turned out it was DFI oil from a leaking crankcase seal that had made its way down the shaft. So even though the purpose of that tiny hole is to let you know that a LU seal is leaking, engine oil can also make its way down and exit there. Your mechanic is probably correct in it being residual oil from the leaky pump, assuming there are no other leaks.

From what I understand, the motor will not run very good when that is the case especially at idle and the compression on the bottom cylinder will be low when the seal is leaking. I’m hoping that’s not my issue as my motor is purring like a kitten. I also find it odd that this oil showed up right after my pump was leaking. In any case, it’s going to the mechanic in the morning and my fingers are crossed!!

Oil tank reservoir seal… Pin hole in oil tank..Could easily be either.
