High Engine Temp

I had a post up a while back about getting a very high dash temp while running 3500-4000 RPM. BCB recommended that I change the water pump. I did but am still getting the high dash readings. I know the 200 EFI is supposed to have an audible alarm warning when it starts to overheat. Thank goodness I have never heard the thing go off! But seeing the pegged out read out on the dash just bothers me. Wondering what else could be the issue? Or how difficult is it to add a analog temp gauge?00 PIII 200 EFI

I went throught this issue somewhat myself. My guage would peg itself once in awhile. I believe you should change the thermostats. If that is not your problem then it most likely is the temp sending unit on the motor. The digital dash would respond to sender changes quicker than a analog guage and could be a little more sensitive. If you know for a fact that you are not overheating then the temp sensor would be the first thing I would change. I just ignore mine but will probably change it later this fall, just in case…

You need to have a technician look at this before it costs a new powerhead. It could be as simple as a bad temp sensor, or a plugged thermostat. Though we would have it checked out.BCB

Mine does the same thing on my 200 efi. I changed the water pump and it still does it. Id test and make sure that my heat alarm works. Ive been running it like this for over a year.

There was a pump kit fo a 150 optimax on a service bulletin. Just a thought that you may be able to use that same kit ot solve this. See you local dealer and the Merc Service Desk probably can help them. BCB

Was wondering how hard it is to change the temp sensor on the engine. Is it something you can just splice a new one on near the motor, or does it require a home run all the way to the dash. Come to think of it my water temp and my trim sensors are always off as well. I tried to calabrate my trim gauge with the manual…didnt seem to help any. As for the water temp gauge it works when it wants and when it does work it always jumping around like crazy!
