Loose Rub Rail Insert

I have a new(September 2010) 2011 Puma FTD. When it is used in choppy water the rub rail insert keeps popping out. Sometime on the port side and sometimes on the starboard side. Does it need to be silicone in or is it too loose and needs to be shortened. It hasnt been pulled from the end caps. It just seems to be too loose.

Thats exactly what I mean. That happened to me at a tournament on the Potomac River ,. We were running back to the ramp for check-in, of course waiting till the last minute. When I saw something go flying by. My partner said that the insert has come loose. Loose was an under statement. I wrapped the bow around the TM head flung the rest down the center of the boat and told my partner to hold on to it as we ran back to the ramp for check-in. I did get there just in time and did get 6th in the tournament with 18.83lbs. After getting the boat on the trailer the rail was easy to just pop back in, and there was no extra slack that I could see. It just keeps popping out.

My P2 (2010) has the same issue. It hasnt come loose to the extent I see in the pic, but a have a big loop near the transom. All the the rest of the insert is in place, leading me to believe that it was put in in cold weather and has expanded. I was thinking of putting that system for night fishing that puts LED lights in the rub rail, but this issue has spooked me on that.

i would take it back to your dealer or basscat to get them to fix it for good so you dont haft to keep putting it back in because to me it seems like a pain in the butt

I can fix it, what I want to know is do I pull it tighter and secure at the ends or does it need silicone to be held in place?

You should be fine on the insert, just reinsert the center spacing it out along the way with the excess being worked into many areas and not just one. Dont cut it short as you will shorten the rub rail in colder weather as it will shrink. The black lights should not impact the rub rail center, though may help it some. BCB

BCB, I have reinstalled it from the bow working my way back to the transom as it was installed when I received it. It seems to be there is too much slack when the weather is hot. I didnt have a problem when it was cooler or in the cold. I was thinking that it might be a tad to long. Do you ever use silicone to hold in place?

No, though urethane would hold it if you prefer. Silicone is no going to adhere to the rubber rub rail. BCB
