Frogs

I was fishing a while back with pant2 and he was really into plastic frogs (if your reading Bob, cant wait to get out again, I got my boat back!). Anyhow, I was out on Lake Austin yesterday and used them for the first time (Ribbits and Yums). It didnt matter what color I was throwing, the result was the same, tons of swirls but no fish in the boat. Am I doing something wrong? I thought I knew how to fish top waters; Ive caught many in the past. I dont think I was yanking the bait out of their mouths. It was a lot of fun but frustrating. Finally I reverted back to what I know and had a great day but Id sure like to add another technique.

Place a weighted hook on those frogs, and slow down a bit. Probably an 1/8″ or 3/16″ weighted hook with a front hook keeper run onto the hook itself. Most of those are double grip keepers, and while we cant remember the brand preferred, Mustad does have one. BCB

I had the same problem the other day at Amistad, they would follow and swirl at them. What I had to do was to stop the bait and let it slowly sink (about 5 seconds in most cases) and they would then eat it. If you are fishing it over solid cover, stop it , let it sit and then twitch it.

When I see a fish swirl or hit a frog I drop the rod tip…they typically will not drop a frog so I wait for them to pack it off in one direction or another until I rare back on them. That has helped my hook up percentage 10 fold. Bob is up at Greers chasing hybirds so he wont be around a computer for a while. Being retired and all he just comes and goes as he feels so who knows how long he will be there. Judd Lasiter

Most of what we caught (last week of Sept) was either on a super spook jr. or a Ribbit (smoke blue shad). the fish were moving into the back of the creeks and around the grass. They should really be turned on now, we were just a little early. Schooling fish were pretty much every where, use the spook on them. Ribbits in the grass and along the edges.

Thanks Scott. The last time I went, June I think, I found a creek on the US side right around mile marker 9. It had awesome structure. Rocky, no grass, with humps and points going from 90 feet to 12 feet within a few yards. There was nothing on them in the summer, at least that I could get to bite, but I cant help but think this fall should hold some nice fish. Ive always run right past this spot and never noticed it.
