motor height vs. chine walk

What is the relationship ?First I am NEW to high performance bass boats.Boat info:2008 P2 with 200 opti1/2 tank gas, live wells empty, two people, 26p trophy plus, motor set 3.25″ below pad5350 rpm, 68.6 mph with (my opinion and I have NO experience in an hp bass boat) moderate chine walk.Will the chine walk decrease if I lower the motor to 3.5″ and just trim out more to get the rpms ? or is it just a direct function of learning to drive the boat ?

Since you are new to this game, we think you should take your time before trying to set up your rig. Learn how to drive it and improve your performance without moving the engine. Then once you have the hang of it, you can begin tweaking. We think that in a few trips you will begin to see improvement in your driving skills and also the ability to run higher speeds if you desire and find yourself capable. From what you have mentioned above you are more than capable of moving to the next level soon. Those are very good numbers for what you have defined as a novice bass boater. BCB

It will take a few times behind the wheel, but sooner or later youll get the hang of it!

Let me add a couple of comments from my recent experience. Side Note: It took me quite a while to control chine walk. In order to master chinewalk you need to DEDICATE time behind the wheel. The are two forces at work when running at higher speeds. One is the clockwise spinning prop that causes chine walk and the other is your steering ability to counteract chine walk when it begins. Chine Walks typically relates to the prop spinning clockwise which will throw your boat off the hulls bottom pad when up on plane. The driver needs to make port side steering jerks constantly to counter the clockwise spinning prop to prevent your boat from falling off the bottom pad. All this may sound foreign to you now but you will understand all this better with lots of time behind the wheel at higher speeds to WOT. I was in your shoes one year ago. Hang in there, stay with it and you will be able to drive through chine walk. When you do you will find additional performance from your boat. Here are other relating factors that play into causing and controling chine walk. Trimming your motor height Slight water chop is your friend. It will help keep your boat balanced. Fight the resistance that balancing your boat is the solution. You can get caught up thinking this but the real solution relates to driving ability in my opinion in most cases. This is a good read it goes into allot of detail. Spend time behind the wheel is the best advise you can get!!! Read it before heading out then after you get back everytime you head out and it will come to you. I was on here the same as you and Phill A imputs were the best help. What everyone is saying is right on, but just to add: Lowering your motor makes chine walk worse in most cases, and so does trimming higher. FYI

Lowering should make it worse, as it removes oscillation and slippage of the propeller. Though it may be needed once you get some seat time. The slippage of oscillation does give more control as it increases torque on the steering wheel. If you have steering torque, you should lower it to where you have just a tad. Though it may increase the learning curve.
