Looking for boat insurance. Last year I tried to go with State Farm. Paid the premium of $185.00 in June and got a policy “binder” while the policy was being processed. In about October I got a notice that the paperwork had not been completed correctly and was refunded a portion of my money. The agent I was dealing with was about 80 years old and I had to take him my information 3 times. But he quoted me like $185.00 a year for coverage on the boat, motor and trailer with $2,000 for tackle and electronics. Now Im shopping again and Progressive wants $300+ to what looks like comparable coverage, and a different State Farm agent just quoted me $387.00. This agent said she insures boats all the time but she did not do things like the other quotes. She wanted a grand total for boat, motor and trailer, not individual amounts. I do not understand how 2 State Farm agents itterally 4 blocks away from one another can be $200 different for exact same coverage. The first agent (The old guy) has since retired. Ive read several other forums and post where people are getting insurance for about $200.My question is who do you use and what questions should I ask of the agent. Also a ball park figure of what level of coverage do you have and what you pay if it is not to personal. I ran my credit score through 2 of the 3 services and it is very very good and Ive not ever had an accident. My boat is worth about $9,000150 Merc Motor about $7,000Trailer about $3,000tackle and electronics $2,000Last edited by ctford on February 28th, 2012, 12:03 am, edited 1 time in total.
Before you decide with anyone at least call Bob with Worldwide Marine Insurance and talk with him for 30 minutes. You will learn more about “marine” insurance than you ever though you did. Bob is one of us, bass fisherman, TX fisherman. He knows what we need and how to write it. I had State Farm and Bob saved me $100 a year with a ton more coverage. He even pointed out that on certian bodies of water I wasnt even covered with SF. I have all my gear covered and even on the water towing.http://www.worldwidemarineins.com/
I saved from 1200.00 per year with state farm, to 460.00 per year thru the insurance Joe Thomas advertises for United Marine Underwriters–800-477-7140. This was on a new boat last year.
Oh, I have $50K of coverage on 2012 boat and pay $280/YR Like I mentioned above, just call Bob. The free call is a wealth of information and likes to talk fishing too. 800-339-1235Last edited by GRR884 on February 28th, 2012, 12:22 am, edited 1 time in total.
I use Boat US. All they insure is boats/boat trailers or towing of either. Ive had to call on them a few times since I signed up with them in 1996. Every call was answered in person, not by a machine. Never a fight over coverage. Very helpful when changing boats too. Price is reasonable (discounts if no claims have been filed) and they cover gear, fuel spills, salvage, injuries, etc. All more important then you might think. They will give you a quote on the phone.
Bob sounds good. I use Boat U.S. currently and will say that when all my stuff was stolen last year they were great. I had a check for $3100 to replace everything that was stolen in a short time.http://www.vrbo.com/297770
Thanks guys, this is what I was wanting to know. I posted this in another forum and got 2 responses out of 116 views. Here I get instant and usable feedback. Thank you
I also use Bob with Worldwide Marine Insurance,
also look at declared value vs actual cash value, both have advantages. for me I like declared value so if I have a total loss I know what I will be paid, no hassle or haggle. I also like the disapearing deductable, as i have been claim free for long enough to have zero deductable.I cannot advise on service as I have been very fortunate and not needed to file a claim. At the start of each year I take a couple photos of all my rods and reels as well as tackle, so in teh event of a theft I have a point of refernce to back up my claim of owning way more than I shouldTreat everyday like it might be the last
I also use Boat US and have been very happy with them.
