Random battery charger question

Ok so I havent had a working on board charger in my boat for many years. Heres my question, do you guys plug them in and leave them or unplug when you get a full charge? Probably a stupid question....

I plug in night before I leave and the day I come back for an overnight charge. I have a timer that charges 2 hours in the a.m. and 2 hours in the p.m. for the rest of the time. I do not leave it plugged in and constantly on.GeorgeGeorge

I charge my batteries after fishing. I leave it on, until the batteries are charged, then disconnect it. The night before I go the next time, Ill plug it in and top off the charge. I never leave it on 24/7. Too many things can happen…and most are bad. Lightning strike, charger shorting out and catching fire, etc. All of those things have happened to people. Granted, the odds are not very good it could happen…but with my luck it would, if I left it plugged in all the time.

thats what Ive done so far… plug in when I get back…. unplug when charged… plug back in the night before. Just making sure I shouldnt be trickle charging or something….

I have a Noco charger installed at the factory by BCB. When I get home from fishing, I plug it in and leave it plugged in until I go fishing again. This works fine for me. I have done this for a long time with several boats.

As Billius mentioned is the way to do it. No way will I ever leave it plugged in always. Chargers can fail. Seen to many pictures of burned up boats and houses from charger failures. Its not worth the risk to me.

I also do it the same way as Bill. I used to leave it plugged in 24/7, but read a few stories about some fires a couple of years ago.

Likewise. Full charge after discharge then on a timer. Had a battery explode one time leaving it on charge all the time. What a mess.

I have had a boat at Lake Conroe for 40 years. Not the same one, several. I have left my charger plugged in for forty years without a problem. If it burns up I will collect insurance and buy another.
