There are plenty of fishing opportunities in the area, both fresh and salt. I lived in Houston for 4 years and fished East Texas a lot and I wouldnt say one is better then the other, just different. There are a lot of electric only lakes on the Peninsula, great 9.9 hp lakes in Suffolk, and really good tidal bass fishing in the area (James, Chowan, and Potomac Rivers if you want to make the drive). Kerr (Bugs Island), Gaston, Anna, and Smith Mountain are reasonable drives if you really need to satisfy your big water lake itch. Back Bay is coming back nicely and really convenient to VA Beach.
