Trailer Tire issue…

Looking for some input, hopefully from BCB. I have a 2015 Caracal with dual axle trailer. The front tire on the passenger side is worn completely bald only on the inside. None of the other 3 tires are worn seemingly at all. What is causing just this one tire to wear like this? Boat and trailer and not that old. I would prefer to fix whats causing the wear before putting money into a new tire. I would assume that being a custom BassCat trailer I would need to take to a BassCat dealer for service right?

Im not a tire or alignment expert, but I have those tires and rims. I took the tires to get them balanced and the dealer said theyve never seen tires take so much weight for balancing. They had weights stacked on top of weights. Im sure someone will come along with a better answer.

Axle or hub issue. You could change that to your spare tire. Otherwise youre going to have to buy a new tire. Take it to your dealer so they can find out the cause. Just be prepared it wont be under warranty. Been down this route.

There are many factors that cause tire wear. Usually bent spindles, ovaled idler arms and last are loosening tension bolts on the idler mounting. Bearings also can cause issues, though seldom is that the factor in todays axles. Bad tires are usually the last issue.

I had a drum brake trailer from a different brand that locked up the brakes every once in a while and left flat spots all over the place. I finally figured it out after two different tires. I too thought it was the tires (goodyear marathons), finally figured it out when I started to take apart the brakes, drums, and bearings. Once I got down that road I did not have any further problems. And yes it was not torsion arm axle as well.

I went to look on the BCB site for trailer warranty info, but the trailer page has no info. I thought since the trailers were custom made and a “point of pride” for Bass Cat that they would have some sort of warranty?

Trailer warranty is 2 years from date of sale and they review everything as a customer service item. The statement above surrounds one trailer and we prefer not to comment on that. We have tried not to expand or discuss any situations in public. They ask that you work through your selling dealership. If the boat is second ownership and the lifetime transferable warranty is not transferred under Quest then they will not view it as a customer service item. The axles are UFP/Dexter and they also play into the warranty on the axle portion.

A 2007 model is not covered under warranty and likely not have any customer service, as if it is wearing tires 10 years later then something has gotten misaligned. That usually starts with the idler torsion bolt loosening and they are set at 150 pounds of torque. That will wear the splines in time and the holes wears the idler and splined shaft. The next thing to look at is the spline area on the idler for limited wear and oblonging of the spline hole. If the hole is oblong then an impact, curb, ditch or some other contact pulled the spindle out and likely stretched the idler hole. Then it will not tighten. Last is a bent spindles from a similar impact.

Ive had the same exact problem (only one tire wearing improperly and that on the inside half). Ive been working with Dexter/UFP and I have found them to be very helpful. I received a PDF document from them that details items and measurements that should be checked for potential trailer alignment problems. If youd like to PM me your email address, I will send you the document. I tried to attach it to the post but was unable due to “invalid file extension”. This is my second go around with improperly wearing tires on a four year old rig and to say it is frustrating is an understatement. On mine, the toe out measurement was off by 1/4″. Dexter sent me a new hub/trailing arm as a first step and that did nothing to improve the improper toe measurement. They have now sent me a new axle which I have yet to install as it was bare metal and I had to paint it. Our season is very compressed up here and a a result, Im reluctant to spend fishing time wrenching on my rig during the height of the season.
