Looking for recommendations for a Good Squarebill Rod

I’d like to upgrade the rod I am using for Squarebill Crankbaits. I have several rods that work, but they each have something that bugs me about them a little bit. Too long, too short, too firm, not firm enough, handle too long, can’t handle larger lures.

I’m looking for a rod that is 6’4” to 6’10”. Designed for lures from 1/4 to 3/4 oz. line like 10-20 lb. MHpower and moderate speed. I think it will always have treble hook lures tied on and while I
don’t want a dead stick, Squarebill strikes aren’t usually to difficult to detect.

It might be labeled for spinnerbaits or TopWater s, or crankbaits. I just want a shorter handle and a little shorter length for to help with casting accuracy

The Falcon Cara series is where we would look for this rod. They are USA Made and good high grade Fuji components with the length your after and a backbone on the lower shaft, plus a quick tip in high modulus graphite. They are splined which adds accuracy and the tip is wrap loaded down about 2-3 feet. That helps accuracy also.

Get whatever handle you like, though cork will help accuracy too as it’s a consistent grip. Don’t run much more than 3/4 spool on the reel and it will help also.

Everyone overfills a spool, and you will too.

Getting under things isn’t science, it’s practice and equipment setup.

Check out the Dobyn’s Safari line. It is a very parabolic line and the 684C would fit your requirements perfectly……

I have the Champ series Dobyns in the 684 and 705. Light, sensitive, and the parabolic action is perfect.

Help me understand why only fill the spoil 3/4 full? I just want to understand why?

Also when you say get under things what do you mean?

There’s lots of good rods out there. I use a Fenwick Elite Tech Bass Casting rod, model number ETB66M-FC It is a Medium action, 6’6″ rod with a Fast tip, which for Fenwick means the top 1/3 of the rod gives good action and accuracy, but has enough backbone to handle the fish. It will fish line in the 8-14 lb test ranges, with lures from 3/8 oz to 5/8 oz. I use it for squarebills and also for shad shaped cranks in the 6-8 ft deep range. For $149, it’s hard to beat. It also has a shorter straight handle that is just right for the purpose. Titanium guides, nice copper finish, and the grip is very comfortable.

The Falcon Cara squarebill special is awesome for squarebills and spinnerbaits. At 6’6” and a “shorter” handle, it’s perfect for closer highly accurate casts.The reason for a 3/4 full spool is less spool energy for backlashing. “Getting under things” is to bullet cast underhand below brush and overhangs back in the shade.

If you are willing to look at a little bit longer rod i would look at the Ark Tharp Series Glass Casting Rod 7′ Med Hvy Grinder. I throw most of my cranks on it except for deep divers

I’ve had very good luck w/ fishing Denali rods.  Check out the Lithium med hvy crankbait rod (http://www.denalirods.com/lithium7medhv … igrod.aspx) or the Kovert med crankbait rod (http://www.denalirods.com/kovert610meds … 2-1-1.aspx).

I’ll second the dobyns champion 705 cb glass. The rods are just as light possibly lighter than the graphite ones. I fish mainly 2.5’s on mine. I actually ended up with both the 705′ glass rods, and one 704. The 704 is extremely parabolic and I use if for wiggle warts and smaller cranks. The 705 mod I use for dt10s or similar sized cranks. The 705 med/hvy fast I use for the medium to larger square bills. I think you might prefer the moderate one if you want it to flex some in the center. Both load up alot differently than my previous glass cranking rods (shimano compre). I have noticed my hook up and keep on ratio has increased. I do not fish any grass, if your cranking around grass you might not want the glass rods. They can be had on amazon at a fair price, or american legacy fishing. Often used on bbc boards rods for sale. Good luck!

I have had great success with Kistler’s KLX Feel and Reel – it’s a half glass-half graphite blank and performs flawlessly for my square bill applications.  I have several of them but the 6’10” Medium and Medium Heavy are my number one choices.  Give them  try.
