Courtesy light repair/fix/images

Hey yall I had a few courtesy lights not doing their thing the other day and decided to fix them. I figured it wasn’t the bulb and here’s my attempt to help others. These lights are super useful as we all know while waiting to take off in am and a number of other times.

Dont know if anyone else has had these lights act a little inconsistent as I have.

I have looked at length to find led lights that have a switch, are horizontal and similar and size, and are water tolerant. Good luck. Cant find any.

So heres the deal with these bad boys-

First you gotta get behind one and bend this clip back

Here’s the crux of the issue with these lights. When you rotate the lens you rotate this little roller. Gotta touch the side plate to get these lights to have a complete circuit.

On position- but because no contact with side AND tail- LIGHT WONT COME ON. Weak issue of design- tail bends over time-

The solution to the lights working I think in most situations is either bend the arm up or swich your wires to another post in the rear. In my boat if you switch the wire hookup to the third post you get light from the courtesy lights whenever the main power is on- which I think? would burn the bulbs pretty fast and they arent apparently removable.

I believe on the merc setups the courtesy lights may only come on with nav light on or key to on position if you use this hookup instead?

I fixed mine by just bending up the lever to allow the roller and the sideplates to meet. Good as new. took 5 minutes and I didnt order a new light.(yes I am that cheap/anal).

Wish there was a better option but these lights are clearly the best option I have found.

Mine’s jacked up as well. Guess it’s time to clean and bend the contacts. I agree it would be better to have a LED unit w/ an actual switch that was made for marine use.

Ahh! EVEN BETTER! Petroleum jelly woulda been even better. Mine dont stick but trying to get some electrical conduction when the brass is inevitably gonna bend will be a ton easier now.
