It’s all give and take. My guess is I could probably turn a 26 Tempest solo to near your speed, but I’d lose holeshot and load carrying…as well as rpms. You could try raising the motor an 1/8-1/4, but watch your rpms and water pressure. I’m not a fan of jacking the motor up high on a BCB or any brand boat. There is a safety aspect to consider, and it doesn’t take much for things to go terribly wrong doing 70 mph or less. I think this is even more critical on a 18’ boat. Even BCB has stated that their boats are designed to run with the engine lower than other brands, and they have cautioned raising engines too high. I think 3 3/8 PTP on yours is fine.
Shoot for at least 5900 rpms running solo, full gear, and full gas tanks. Personally, I think you need a 24 pitch SHOmax or Tempest for all around performance, but that’s your call. You will probably lose 1-2 mph on top end, but hole shot and mid range should improve nicely. It will carry 2 passengers better as well. Ask around to borrow a 24 pitch, or call BCB to see if they have a demo prop they could sell you at a discount. As far as new props go, I’ve been happy with the prices at Rothwell Marine in Arkansas. They will let you swap for a different pitch as long as it’s in mint condition after tryin it.
