Comparing Garmins to 3rd gen Lowrance HDS9 and Hummingbird gen 2 helix 9s, they are ok. I like the trail features on the Lowrance better, I like the side scanning on the birds better. The 2d sonar on the Garmin and Lowrance are about a dead heat. However, live scope on the Garmin is the real deal. If you can afford 10″ units buy them, I put 2 9″ units on the front and a 10″ on the console. The 10″ Garmin is very clear. I linked all of mine together with the box that Garmin has out due to the 9″ units only having one jack per unit. So I like that linking ability better on the Garmin, as well as the ability to put the live scope on any screen in the boat. The Lowrance you can update it via the internet, my gen 3s I did through the units, the Garmin you have to go through the active captain app. I have also linked every Garmin item in my boat together, panoptics, trolling motor, and all graphs so that is a good deal as well. Also as I stated the mount on the 9″ units are different than the 10″ Ultra. That being said, Garmin 93SV units (this years models) can be had for around $500 each now, there are places that have them on sale. That is versus the almost $2,000 per 10″ unit. New HDS lowrance units are not cheap either, 9″ ones are about the same cost as the 10″ Garmin. Overall so far I do like the Garmin units but I am really impressed with the trolling motor and the live scope. Now I just have to spend more time with this stuff and get it down.
