I have a 2020 Caracal with Lowrance Elite Ti2 12-inch factory-mounted flush in the console (photo below). I'm thinking of upgrading to HDS Live 12-inch, trying to decide between in-console vs. out-of-console (I'll call it "above console") with a backing plate to cover the hole made for the current Ti2. So, what is anyone's experience with this? I have the following questions:
Which do you like better (pictures may help)? I like the clean, flush mounted appearance, but the steering wheel annoyingly limits access with my fingers and line-of-sight to the bottom third of the screen of the current Ti2. Disadvantages to above-console is having to install a backing plate, and wires exposed to open air. Wires exposed with above-console can also be an advantage in ease of access - I occasionally have to reset the power cable to get the Ti2 to power up when starting up, having to reach under the console to re-seat the power cable. Future upgrades and additions may also be easier with above-console.
If going in-console, I believe I would have to cut a bigger hole for the HDS Live 12, correct (I've seen templates for Lowrance)? Does it fit well once done, without gaps created by the current cutout of the Ti2? With the GPS antenna location of the HDS Live, is there a spacing problem inside the console (I have a Point-1, so I don't necessarily need the reception of the on-unit GPS)? Is the console material difficult to cut clean?
If going above-console, what is the best backing plate? I know Sherm's makes custom mounting plates, looks like it would secure over the current Ti2 cutout. Also know Precision Sonar has a generic plate, but don't know how that would work with the Ti2 cutout. Other options? I do like the thought of not having to cut the console material, but also want to make sure the install is clean looking.
Are the power connectors for the Ti2 the same as the HDS Live, making it an easy swap? Or will I have to run new power cables?
