Tow Van

I would like to tow my BassCat with a Van.  I’ve just started considering different vans.  I know the Ford makes the Transit vans and Dodge has a van…..but I wanted to ask you guys if any of you tow your BassCat with a van.  I’ve also started looking at the GMC express vans.

It would be great if I purchased a van, to turn it into my fishing vehicle.  Carry a bunch of spare stuff and fishing equipment and probably fix an area in the back to sleep and camp with.

I don’t have 100k to put into this….that’s why I was thinking about purchasing a used work-style van and upfitting the back in the way I would like to see it.

I don’t know if these transit vans have the tow capacity that I would need…and if not, what would?

Ignoring tow capacity, the Ford Transit High Top I like.  Its just a hull with two seats that I could stand-up in the back and upfit the way I would like…..but I don’t think they can tow the weight of my boat.

Any input would be appreciated.

Most are borderline for a long trip. The Mercedes Sprinter types are very good diesel vans and can do the job.

Run very far away for Sprinter.  They have problems.  Just google them.  Fords Transit is excellent.

We have a 2020 Ram Promaster short wheelbase/high roof and love it. It tows our 2022 Caracal SP no problem and we have a hill on the way to Nacimiento Lake called Hell Hill for a reason, it’s 1/2 mile long with twistys so you can’t really get a run at it and our van, with a V6 tows our boat up it as fast or faster than our Ford F150 did. On flat ground you can’t tell the boats behind you, highly recommend the Promaster.

Rich, we actually had good luck with Dodge Sprinters (Mercedes) as long as the service was performed by a Sprinter or Mercedes actual dealership. If it was done by a certified diesel center we had terrible experiences. Once we got back to Mercedes’ only dealerships, we returned to a positive experience.

Mercedes vehicles are often complex and the technicians must be fully trained we found. There were six (6) ports to check transmission levels on, and often the localized shops had no true knowledge of those depths in understanding.

I used a high top conversion van Ford E150 for years to tow my bass boat and when I competed on a couple of national circuits. It was great as the drive was very nice and it was really convenient to be able to pull off and take a nap for a couple of hours on long hauls without the expense of a hotel and the hassle of getting into and out of the parking lots.
