Cons 1. Needs 93 octane. 2. Needs a LOT of 93 octane. 3. Someone may set me straight on this but I think there were issues with the lower units. Being that it is 9 years old by now this should be less of a concern. I know two who had them and both lost multiple gearcases.Bill Spence St. Albans, VT billspence@yahoo.com http://www.twinstatebassin.com Bass Cat Boats http://www.basscat.com Vexilar Marine Electronics http://www.vexilar.com
Everything I ever hear is positive except for the gas, it has a bulletproof reputation. Search over at bassboatcentral.com or fastbass.com, they claim you can watch your gas gauge drop at full throttle, but youll have fun doing it. I bought my 02 Jag with a 225 Optimax due to the mileage issue, the powerhead was replaced in 06, I got the boat in spring 07, the three seasons Ive had it its been trouble free, but I still wish I would have gotten the XB for the speed. I think the XB motors are holding their value better than the optimaxs, but Im probably all wet. The one thing I like that the Opt has and the XB does not is the Smartcraft guage system. I went back and looked at the sale page on that 01 Jag with the XB, I have the same color scheme on my boat except for a red trimmed black bolt and dual consoles. I love my Jag and would buy another in a minute, I fish the BASS Federation tournaments in Mt as well as a bunch of team tournaments, it works great for both. The live wells are big, the back deck is big, I have the flipping deck insert and use it sometimes and pull it at other times to save weight. Im adding the bucket seats to mine as soon as BCB ships them out. The only thing I want on it that I dont have is another 50 horsepower. Mike
No issues! Will pass most everything, but will not pass Conoco, must take a Conoco barge with you on the voyage. 93 Octane is correct. Runs Da___d good on that 93 Octane though. No gearcase issues we know of that were not self inflicted or connected to Hot Foots. BCB
I ran one on my 2001 Jaguar up until I got my 2008 Puma. I had no issues with the motor. It was serviced according to the factory schedule and I always ran 93 octane gas with Quick Kleen. The sound it makes is awesome!! Sounds like my old race car. The thing was a monster motor from mid range to top end. The low end torque was a little soft though. I still miss the punch compared to the Yamaha I now have. As has been stated, the only drawback was fuel mileage. Mine would drink 29 gallons per hour at wide open throttle. Even if I used it gently, it would really burn the gas but you have to feed those horses.
The fuel is not that big a issue.I do not get to fish but about 15 -20 times a year, about 1 turny a month, so if im sucking a little gas but passing those guys that been passing me for years wooohooo. might have a empty bag but they will still know who I am. lol
I run an 02 Jag w/250XB ( 27 Trophy ) . I have close to 1000 hours on this motor and she still is a beast. Believe what you have heard about the fuel, if you run her hard you can expect about 2 miles a gallon, the upside to this is that this motor will burn a lot less oil than your Optis .My only major repairs were that the motor mount nuts loosened up and the p-head had to be pulled to fix and I did have a lower unit problem after a “Basscat vs Rockpile ” incident .
Ifishdad, go to Screamandfly.com, under the forum area you will find some of the Most Knowledgeable guys to help with whatever brand of motor questions you may have, from what I know like stated above that motor is a Monster, kind of a Hybrid using alot of Merc Racing 300 X parts and Bulletproof Reliability….You can even call guys like Jay Smit or Brucato and get alot more power while actually Turning up the Efficiency……What hull is it on? I hope a Light one like a Early Cougar, if so your gonna have a BULLET….get yourself a New 26Fury (if thats steep enough) and Break alot of hearts, You really do gotta make sure to run like above GOOD Gas, not just 93octane but I recommend to all customers Shell 93, even in my Turbo Subaru I get a Real 2mpg difference between it and other 93 octanes (BP,Mobil)…..Quikleen and a De-Carb (If recommended), and you wont have any troubles….Seriously though, go to scream and fly, under the Outboards Posting area ask the question about it, you will be shocked at the info you can get, and it will really help…..Whats the colors of the BCB your looking at? A couple of comments. (1) A friend owned an XB until last year. Last time we flowed the thing, it was burning almost 28 gallons per hour wide open. The only way you should get 2mpg with that motor is if your boat wont go past 56 mph. His bullet would run beyond 90, which was just over 3mph. (2) the motor is really quite a beast. Not as good as the old Merc 2.5 racing motors that would turn 7500 rpm stock, but very strong with a really cool sound. Rock-solid for the years he owned the thing. Did the usual maint. stuff every 2 years (new water pump, lower unit seals, etc).2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
