I have never used the amsoil hp marine oil I assume you are referring to.

I have used amsoil products for over 20 years of my adult life on everything from my diesel pickup to my weed eater. In an older boat we had(85 hp evinrude) that we had to premix, that had the two removable 6 gallon tanks. We used sabre oil, which is not even recommended for today’s outboards. We ran it 80 to 1. It was a 1974 Newman ski boat, my folks sold it in 2004. Impeller and plugs were all that were ever changed. She would fire right up after sitting all winter. But my dad would unhook from the tank and run it dry and when it started sputtering he would choke it till it died. That boat and motor spent many hours(years) on the lake. Our family vacations always revolved around a lake. Texoma and lake Hamilton(AR) being the main 2 lakes. Texoma is a very brackish lake.

My new 4 stroke proxs will get amsoil in the engine and the gear box. Just my $.02

Those old motors did very well running the fuel out of the carbs but the new fuel injected motors they don’t recommend doing that. Pretty far off subject though. No Amsoil experience.

Can’t speak to the Amzoil – but can to the Merc Premium Plus. A 2-stroke is eventually going to come apart – the question is when. I’ve run a 2008 150efi for several hundred hours on my ‘08 Sabre. As most Sabre owners do,  it has 2 speeds ( idle & wfo).  I’ve never put a drop of oil in my tank that wasn’t Merc Premium Plus. Last fall, had the compression checked at the dealership. Results were 129-132 across all 6, pistons clean. If it’s done that good on the rings, I can only assume the rod & mains are in the same shape.  I’m well out of warranty, but see no reason to do anything different. The oil pump & injectors are designed to run this oil & viscosity as well as the additive package. Why should I risk what’s been perfect so far.

A big thank you for all the input. I too use 100% synthetic in my vehicles, I used to have a Dakota V-6 with 130,000 miles years ago that needed intake gaskets and when I took off the manifold and valve covers I was shocked as to how brand new everything looked. I contacted a friend at a boat dealer today and he said Mercury synthetic blend was excellent and was not too sure from going to a blended oil to 100% synthetic oil.

I will say the salesman is really persistent telling me about an Optimax 150 with 1,800 hours with even compression and still going strong and other related stories…:)

I do know regular maintenance is the key but I would like an edge.  😉

I have a 2017 Cougar with a 250 Pro XS. My boat yard is a racing shop as well and he uses Mercury premium plus. He likes it over the Optimax oil because he says it flows better especially if you run in colder temps. When you race stuff and you are not meticulous stuff blows up so that is as good a recommendation as I need.

Great to hear! I respect everyone’s opinion and comments.

I am going to try Amsoil after my Mercury blended oil is gone. I talked to a marina on the Ohio PA border who sells it and he showed me some eye dropping results in regards to lubricity and cleanliness of the internals of the engine.

Also he says if you have an E-tec and use xd100 oil that is a great alternative to Amsoil, except he says their product is cheaper??? (I have a Mercury)

I think we all know that regular maintenance no matter what product we use is the most important, I am looking for a bit of an edge and also like to maintain my engines and keep them at their optimum performance so I will experiment with 100% synthetic oil.

I use Mercury DFI oil.  Most likely other oils would be okay to use. I just don’t see any reason not to use something Sherm and Mercury recommend for my outboard.  No more than it costs, compared to the cost of a new engine(which you can’t get now), I’ll stay with my DFI stuff.

I just sold a 2006 Pantera Classic with a 2006 200hp Optimax on it with over 1050 hours. I have only used DFI oil in it, along with Marine Formula stabil in every tank.
