2003 XR6 Merc not starting

Good morning everyone,I am having an issue with my Merc not wanting to start until I pull the cowl off and push the button on the fuel enrichment solenoid (gold contraption right beside the starter). If I do not do this the motor will just turn over and over and over with nothing firing off. I have changed that particular part out a few weeks ago and that didnt seem to be the problem. It only happens on the first crank, as it will crank the first key turn every other time the rest of the day. I have fresh gas, new plugs, clean carbs, yall know, everything someone would need to eliminate these problems, but as of right now I am clueless as to what to do next. Suggestions anyone ?

2 other possibilities.1- Change the gas line from the tank to the motor. 2- Diaphragm in the fuel pump needs relacing,Ethanol is a !$%*%. Good luck !!!!!!

It sounds like your enrichener is not working with the key switch. You can test for voltage going to the enrichener valve using a voltmeter and have someone turn key, push in key and check for voltage on the yellow wire. If there is no voltage then the ign. switch could be faulty. If there is voltage then the enrichener valve is bad.

I assume you are pushing in the key while in the run position for a 8-10 count prior to trying to start?? Longer or less time depending on temps… You should be able to her a “click” when pushing in the key as Tommy mentioned if it dont hear a click when pushed in then check power..It could be the ign. switch or wireing issue since you already mentioned that you replaced the enrichner valve..

Agree with all of the current thoughts but wanted to add another idea. I had a 2001 XR6 and had similar issues during a 4-6 month period. Tried all of the things you did but realized that one item I changed (the fuel pump diaphram) required its removal and removing the fuel lines running to and from the diaphram. I did not get one of the connections air tight and that was causing an air leak that made the engine hard to start and nearly impossible to idle. It wasnt enough to let fuel run out but enough to allow extra air to enter. I tried using the plastic ties like Mercury had but could not get enough pressure with them and had to go to the metal bands. Make sure all of your fuel line connections and secure and tight. After figuring that out it ran just like new again. Good Luckps It was also allowing the primer bulb to deflate after pumping which should have been my first clue. If you are having that issue look at the fuel line connections!

Check the collar to the igniton switch to make sure it is tightened all the way down. Ive had two seperate occasions where collar had backed out and prevented the ignition key from pushing down the primer button and the engine from starting.
