93 XRI trim went all the way up while boat sitting???

Went to Roy Lake South Dakota over the weekend boat ran great fishing was amazing! I returned Sunday night after the 6 hour drive home in the rain and did a quick walk around and the boat was fine engine was craddled nicely by the transom saver. Monday afternoon I got home from work and the engine was all the way up?! At first it just made a clicking sound like a solenoid trying to engage, after a few times the engine trimmed down but wont go up? I thought maybe is was just the switch on the engine but the console and bow trim yielded the same thing it will go down but not up?!?! Really hope the trim motor didnt get fried.....! Havent had much time to dig apparently I was greatly missed at work I dont have a day off until next Wedensday so I thought the board would be a good place to start my troubleshooting! HELP!!!!! On a 1993 it is usually the trim switch on the cowling. It also can be the front bow switches and check the relays on the engine.

I spoke to soon… I replaced the relay, went fishing once the boat was parked for a few days and went to take it out on the river and the trim had shorted out and this time it burned up the trim motor…… GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! Took it to the shop this time, he said I was lucky I still had a boat it fried the crap out of the trim motor, he couldnt find anything that was screaming at him that would cause the short. So, I had him disconnect the front trim (I will run new wiring for it myself no need to pay him $100.00 an hour to run wires) Im replacing the trim switch in the throttle box and the trim switch on the engine, replacing both relays and now replacing the fried trim motor. Like I said nothing is sticking out like a sore thumb to me or him and I really cant afford to be replacing trim motors regularly… Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions as to what the culprit might be? He also said the trim switch on the cowl of these motors was pretty notorious for having a mind of its own… Im also gonna put in an inline switch for the starting battery so when I park it I can disconnect the battery with the flip of a switch. Besides that my throttle cable is worn and the throttle control box had something break inside so I guess its time to install a hot foot….. I guess its just money right?

Years ago I had a 92 model XR6 150 Merc and the cowling switch wouldnt trim down and the mechanic told me I was better off to unplug it and not use it due to the problems you are having. Not saying that this is your issue. But could be. I never replaced it because he had me gun-shy of future problems

Actually on some of these older engines you can remove the switch and carefully disassemble it. Then place petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or dielectric grease in the switch cavity and it will override the moisture issue. Sweating inside the switch has caused more trim motors to burn up than anyone would believe. Another thing to check is the front switch boot hats that get torn and allow moisture in those switches. That front switch moisture usually drains well and doesnt cause issues unless its very moist and humid.

Thanks gentleman! Im just disconnecting the front trim for now I will install new switches and run new wire this winter. Already installed a new switch on the engine, petro jelly on that switch sounds like something that would be worth adding to the annual maintenance list…. Trim motors could get expensive at the rate Im at!
