accurately setting my gas gauge

I recently purchased a 06 P4 with Smart Craft gauges. I have been trying to get the gauges to accurately reflect the gas used/gas left when operating. My dealer told me that I had to fill the tanks up in quaters (while at the pump) and set the digital guage each time I put in a 1/4 amount of gas...(figuring this amount out by taking the totally capacity and dividing by 4), put in a 1/4 set the gauage at 25% full, than 1/2 full set the guage at 50%, than 3/4 full and so on untill 100% full for the guage to accurately reflect what is trulely left in the tanks. Not much mention of that in the smart craft guide I have. Are you guys familiar with this process or does this sound strange?? Not wanting to run out of gas!!! Thanks for the help in advance
