I know that you guys get tired of all the same question concern what prop is best for what boat and all the ensuing questions regarding the factors of load, temp, wind, etc, etc. Well, I have to ask about my 09 Sabre FTD with a Merc 175 Pro XS. I see where all the guys keep posting numbers for 150s running in the low 60s and just really cant seem to digest this since I cant get but 60 running some 5000 rpms with a 25P Tempest Plus. My dealer thinks it is proped just great since it came from Mtn Home with the 25P prop. I have raised the plate about 1/4 inch, but when it is trimed to what I call the extreme it starts a mild walking motion. At any rate, I need suggestions if should I raise the plate another 1/4 inch or put it back to factory settings and envy the rest of the world. I do carry a tournament load of gear, fuel, 3 batteries, etc, but do think it should turn more than 5000 rpms. I normally only look at the GPS for my speed as there is about 8 mph difference with the speedo; the speedo is normally very generous with its readings. Could the engine not be performing as it should? It just seems to run very smooth and pops right on plain. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
BamaCat, lets go back to the beginning! Has your boat always run 5000 rpm since you have owned it? Did you buy the boat new? I assume the answer to both questions is yes because of your comments about factory set-up and your dealers comments. If my assumptions are correct, I stand by my suggestion. If the boat was running faster, and for some unknown reason its performance fell off, I would say to let the shop check it out.
The 150 EFI engines are not as stout at the older XR6 models. These usually run well with a 23 Tempest and have more overall performance around 60. Though we see some run better, we shoot for 60 ranges on this application. BCB
09 Sabre,150 EFI,by myself with a light load and 12 gal of gas,23 pitch Trophy,quarter above flush on 8 inch slidemaster,5500,,61mph gps,,no plugs removed,great hole shot,good in rough water.
08 Sabre, 150EFI, by myself w/ light load 23 Tempest Plus – 62 @ 5700rpm. Loaded w/ partner full tanks & wells – 59 @ 5500. This is running in 90+ heat – should see better numbers when it cools down. I was running a 24 Tempest Plus – cool water it turned 64 by myself – 62 w/ partner. Went with the 23 to help with hot weather hole shot and load carrying. Move most of your tackle to rear boxes and only carry life jackets, rain suits, and light stuff” in the front storage.
Well there went my idea of trying a 24 for more speed. Im getting mid 60s gps loaded(not livewell) out of my 23. The flip side of that is Im passing bigger more powerful boats in rough water.
I would chime in with great things to say about the 24 Fury but I have it on a XR-6….apparently it is a different beast. If you can turn it….it is a great prop to run on the Sabre.ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
