Another Week at TOLEDO BEND in the books!

Well, Unfortunately our week long trip to Toledo is over. Well, its not all bad as I came home to my Beautiful Wife and Daughter. Both of whom I seem to miss more each year when I leave. Anyway, Heres a few details. The bite started off hot as soon as we arrived Sunday around 11:00 a.m. We caught 17 keepers in about 5 hours that evening and it looked like the spawn was still in full swing. Best 5 was only aroung 13-14 lbs. Fished the Patroon area mostly main creek points and flats adjacent to deep water. We were catching fish from 6 inches deep to 12 feet deep. Monday was another excellent day as we caught between 25 and 30 keepers with a best 5 of around 18 lbs. We spent our time on Lowes creek and Indian Mounds. Nothing huge but we were starting to put it together. Tuesday the wind blew 400-500 mph out of the south and really challenged us to figure out how to catch them. We did not. It was a tough day for us and we only boated around 8 keepers. This was the day we picked 6 mile and Carrice Creek. Some nice ones but nothing to pattern. Wednesday was a "lets do something different because we arent on any tournament winning fish day." We went North to Martinez and found some nice fish in the 3 lb range. Just not enough bites to justify the long drive there and it was on the other end of the lake from our other good areas. Wednesday afternoon we checked our fish in Patroon and guess what. They were totally gone. That was not good. We needed atleast 3 areas for out 2 day tournament. So we ventured over to the Texas Flats and guess what. Bingo!! We found what we were looking for. A group of quality 3-4 lb fish that could definatley help us. Thursday morning on Tournament day 1 we start in Lowes where we know we can get a quick limit. Well that didnt happen and we left Lowes at 10 a.m. with 2 keepers. Ran down to the Indian Mounds and caught 3 more keepers but nothing big. Pick up and head to The Texas Flats with about 11 lbs in the livewell and get to our little hole and there are about 20 boats in there. We grinded it out and winded up catching a 5 lber on topwater late in the day to bump us up to around 14 lbs. Thats where we finished the day. Not out of it completely but around 5 lbs out of the lead. So, We started day 2 where we finished on day 1 knowing that this area holds big fish and grinded out an 18 lb stringer with a big fish of 7.28 lbs. I had a 5 lber on at the end of the day that would have gave us the win but it wasnt meant to be. She jumped of of my Topwater and that was that. It was a tight weigh in as the day one leaders fell off and only had 11 lbs. We ended up in 3rd but was only separated from 1st by 1 lb. Overall it was a good trip. We had a blast and cant wait to do it again next year. The weights were down a little. It only took 33 lbs to win a 2 day tournament and it usually takes anywhere from 36-42 lbs to win it. The Extremely warm weather has the spawn mostly over at the bend. The only ones left on the beds are small ones but some really nice fish can be caught throwing Top waters right now anywhere you can find good, healthy hydrilla growing in stalks near the surface. It doesnt need to be topped off but needs to be growing near the surface. If you pull up to an area and there is no grass, Dont fish it, move on until you find what you are looking for. Just a little update for those who are thinking about going soon. Ill try to get some pictures up shortly.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Last edited by Shap from La on March 29th, 2011, 2:38 am, edited 1 time in total.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
