Bass Fishing around Houston

Lake Houston or Lake Conroe are the closest to Houston. If youre on the West Side then Fayette County only an hour away. Really depends on what side of town youre on. As far as saltwater……………………………you do what you want, but I would never put my boat in any of that water regardless how good the fishing was!

You keep it away from saltwater. Hire a guide if you want to go. It will be cheaper in the long run. Saltwater will damage a bassboat big time. They just arent made for it. Conroe is your best bet close to Houston. There have been some monster stringers caught on the lake this year. Fayettes a great lake. It may be the easiest lake in Texas to catch numbers of quality fish.

Thanks Phil and Fishspanker. That is interesting. I will look at mapquest and check those. I did that yesterday but what you see and what really is can be different. I did notice Conroe north of Houston. According to web, Houston Lake was not good for fishing. I guess I have been spoiled by having Beaver Lake in NWA in my back door. I was hoping that there was more available in that area. It looked like there were some but not very big or good for fishing. I did notice that Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend was somewhat north of Houston. I am checking this Houston area out. Question. Never had a boat in ocean only fresh water. So saltwater is a problem? Dont they fish for those redfish (dont know anything about them) in gulf or am I mistaken. Do they use another kind of boat? MooseG

It depends what side of Houston you are on. What ever side you are on be prepared to drive and put up with traffic for a while to fish unless you are real close to Conroe. South of Houston there is Texana it is a mud hole but it can be a good numbers lake. Coleto Creek near Victoria is also a good numbers lake with some solid stringers in 20lb range are pretty common. the further South you drive the better it gets Choke Canyon Amistad Falcon but you are a long way from Houston now. In general people come to Houston for the work $$$$$ and not the availability of fishing. When I retire Im outa here.

Lets not forget Lake Raven at Huntsville State Park. There are some 10s and 11s in that lake. It normally has some great grass in it if they havent harvested it lately. Its a no wake lake so dont plan on putting the boat on plane.

Lets not forget about gibbons creek just north east of lake conroe or lake Livingston both are good numbers lakes.Livingston has fantastic white bass and stripers in the fall months.

MooseG, Your in the middle of some good fishing, though you also have a learning curve coming from a White River rock reservoir. You wont need many of those Wiggle Warts and long billed stick baits there. Occasionally yes, though not often. As for fishing it takes a long time to get around Houston so that is a factor. Make the trek to Sam Rayburn and Piney Point at Twin Dikes. Tell the gang (Mike Taylor) hello and enjoy Rayburn. Its not far from north Houston. Livingston can be ok in early spring. Of course Conroe can be rockin! As Phil points out, there are plenty of other options. You have fishing there on par with Grand Lake in its good days. Better in many areas. Just take time and learn how as the old spot tricks wont often help. And there are no smallmouth.

MooseG If youre moving to Houston, then youll want to spend a fair bit of time fishing in E. Texas (Rayburn/TBend). Livingston is smokin hot right now! Best its been since the 70s. Not the best looking lake, but is turning out some good strings. Hurricane Rita revived it I suppose. Fayette County is a hot water lake with a slot. 3-5 lbers practically jump in the boat there. 6 hours to Amistad / 7 hours to Falcon. A lot of different options, but there is a little driving to do!

there are several bass clubs in houston that go to several of the lakes mentioned above. rayburn/toledo bend cannot go wrong. big lakes, lots of bass and grass conroe, used to have alot of grass, not anymore thanks to the carp. been alot of heavy stringers last two years fayette county… mmmmm, fun lake when the summer is over and cools down. my fav!! excellent cabins. limestone is very nice, houston county lake (more rock like stumps than any lake in texas) but has some biggy bass in it.
