Battery charger trouble, tourney in 3 days

2005 Sabre, 150 xr6..... I bought a 3 bank Cabela's- Pro Mariner pro sport 20+ battery charger 2 or so months ago. It replaces my PM 2 bank that came stock with the boat. It has worked flawless until now. I went fishing sunday, and when I came home I plugged her in like always, as soon as I got in my driveway. I unplugged it before I went to bed which should have been enough time to turn the charge light off, but both lights were still on. I plugged it in the next day for some more, it was plugged in at least 5 hours, never checked the light and unplugged. Plugged in after work today just to be sure, gave it 2 hours and its still showing power light and charge light on. Charger was pretty darn warm. Batteries are exactly 1 yr old Trojans. Do you think this is a charger problem?? I can borrow an OHM meter and check the battery voltage tomorrow, guess I could turn on my LMS 480 and check voltage too. What do you experts suggest I do??? I have a tourny this weekend and don't want to run on batterys that may be overcharged, or under, I'll soon find out. I still have the stock 2 bank I can swap out if needed. Never ran out of trolling motor juice at the lake ever. This is frustrating already. Anyone??

We would grab some aligator clips at the hardware or electronics store, and use the 2 bank as a support charger in an emergency.

It sounds like a charger issue, especially if you have Trojan batteries.

It would be a good idea to use a voltmeter to check the batteries and see what they are at. 12.8 is a fully charged battery. Over is not bad to 13.2 hot or appx. there. This is after they have sat static for a few minutes, up to 30.

Any more and you are punching them at over this, then they are probably getting too much charge from a shut off issue.

We will se about those at the shop posting some suggestions on battery chargers which those at the factory who know best prefer. Most won’t go that direction, though they have the best charging solution.

Wont’ help you today, though it will give all somthing to think about.

Chris, its been my experience, especially with the Trojans, that sometimes the big ol posts on these batterys will make contact with the tray that holds them down. Be sure and take a look to make sure they have clearance.

Just goes to show this message board works the best. Posted the same question 3 places and no responses at the other 2 yet. Thanks for the suggestions. I turned on my LMS-480 on status and it said 12.1 v, thats just reading the starting battery though as far as I know. I will check the voltages with an volt meter tonight, should be ok for the weekend because I can use the 2 bank, and I’m sure take my extra charger for the starting.
I have the plastic trays with a strap over the trojans so coming in contact is not an issue.

Well I took all 3 batteries out and cleaned all the terminals and ends. Actually found a small amount of corrosion on the wire ends. A year of ownership goes by fast, first cleaning. I used our shop battery tester, all 3 read full, 12.7-.8 and read good. I plugged the charger back in, both lights stayed on for a half hour, unplugged and in again, and then the charge light went out. Seems sketchy, but its good enough now to get me through the weekend. At least I know they are charging .
