For the Record: We have come on this board before several times now and expanded on our view of on board chargers.
While the best chargers we have used are the AFT Pro Pak and the Guest #2623, we still have failures occasionally.
We started on board chargers as standard equipment in the ’80’s and had we not, some other manufacturer would have. They remain to be one of our highest issue on service adn warranty. We have tried to get the multiple chargers into the boats, with the Lester carry charger as a main charger in 24 and 36 volts.
Both Ron and Rick Pierce use the Lester Carry Chargers now, as do Mike Iaconelli, Mark Tucker and some other Elite Pro’s. There are many reasons, and Mike (Ike) Iaconelli switched after finding the need for a better charge. And we at BCB suggested he try this.
There is no doubt that the individual charger is not as convenient as the on board charger.
*In the Factory OEM Lester set up, you have the on board Professional Mariner Chargers and then you have the carry style 24 or 36 volt Lester Charger. In this case if you want to travel short trips and not take along your Lester, then odds are you will be fine as the quality of charge you have experienced at home is above average. You have your on board Professional Mariner Chargers which will top the batteries off with a fair charge. Not as good as the AFT Pro Pak, though it should be good enough with the Lester as a base unit.
We are not fond of on board chargers either, though we have been unable to take back a trend we started some 20 years ago.
