I noticed this post on ebay for a “Pro’s ” fire damaged Eyra for Sale on ebay. Listing says that fire was caused by using the wrong battery charger with lithium batteries. It would be interesting to find out who this “Pro” was and what combination of batteries and battery charger led to the fire.
There seems to be an increasing interest in using lithium batteries these days and the question always arises as to which battery chargers are compatible with those batteries.
I’m sure that’s Zach Birge’s boat.
Yes it’s Zack Birge’s boat and it caught fire at an event. It was extinguished and there is significant damage around the rear area.
It is important to note that you’ve never heard BCB promote lithium batteries to this time frame. We are nearing an approval with use of Power Poles Charge unit and its development, though not yet. The company remains cautious as some brands of lithium’s they do not want to be associated with in their boats. Of course we have installed them and monitored the Lithium craze going back to their first bass uses ten years ago.
There would be some name brands that the company does not endorse and well don’t want a blank approved affiliation to all lithium battery companies. We also honestly don’t want to speak ill of those companies which are not preferred and we would do a LOT of investigation on what brand of battery to buy.

Please share the brands that you will endorse.
What brand lithium’s does Basscat approve or recommend? I’m due for new batteries and would like to research a “recommended” brand from BCB. Thanks
Bass Cat has not suggested any brands to date on lithium. The BMS on Lithium and the way they maintain has always been a concern of BCB. There is a battery they’ve been working with and they know the higher priced batteries usually have better BMS panels.
The Ionic brand of lithiums is very popular over on Bass Boat Central. There is a particular sponsor who takes good care of the members for those batteries. His web site is Drewcraft and his name is Andrew. If I were ever to go lithium I would still not use one for cranking though.
I will switch to lithium cranking once the AGM I have wears out.
Let see now. BCB does NOT and will NOT recommend any Lith battery at this time. You guys that think you need to run lith batts, who is the first company your going to complain to if your boat burns?
Hint, BCB aint gonna listen much.
Obviously we are assessing how to navigate this forwards as there is plenty of interest. They have been working 30 months with a battery company and have had 4 variations in process. In time they may suggest a lithium option though not many will get the nod.

Burning isn’t even a concern anymore.

Agree, it’s not a concern anymore. A burn issue like the original poster mentioned may have been because someone didn’t do the “due diligence” in checking the charger’s capacities. The learning curve is different, just as it was going from wet cell to AGM, but a little more intense.
My brother has been running lithium in his Puma FTDs since 2014. He’s had no issues with damage, making sure he had the necessary equipment for maintenance of lithium power. You gonna throw down a chunk of change for that kind of power you better know all about how to manage it by the book.
Increasing use of Lithium-ion batteries leads to an increased risk of fire. The switch to Li-ion batteries in the marine sector is mostly driven by the technology’s role in more environmentally friendly shipping. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), 2.2% of all emissions caused by human activity worldwide in 2012 were attributable to shipping. If nothing is done, they predict that this number would rise to 50 to 250% by 2050. Lithium-ion battery use is expanding, which raises the risk of fire.
Aries increase the risk of fire. According to European Union research, scientists say

Interesting that this guy would join to say all of this. Let’s see…. the comments were made in the middle of the night. Guessing he’s in Asia somewhere or he’s a BOT.
For some reason I thought I remember seeing a video of Rick recommending a Lithium cranking battery to use with Mercury motors. Maybe he was just making a recommendation if you were going that direction. I’ll have to see if I can find it.
