Changing props – how much torque 2001 Mercury Optimax 200hp?

My quick google research says 55# for flo-torque hub . — I’m bettin’ you’ll love that 23 Fury too !!

That’s the one I’ve always used – the approx. 2″ conical stepped filler sleeve fits inside the 4″ rubber sleeve. BTW I received a response from Alan in parts, Bass Cat Boats, their rigging dept. torques all props at 100#.

@BigCatter – hoping you are correct as reasonably sure the Fury should get my Pantera III up quickly. Going to try it first with no pvs plugs and right now motor ptp is 3 1/2″ – may have to play with that some and really don’t have any idea how rpms are going to change? RPM’s have been too low at full throttle that I could get with chine walk. Going down should bring the rpm’s up I would think?

Silly question, but have you checked to make sure that you are actually getting full throttle at the motor on the linkage? I ask because back when I had a 99 Opti on my P3, I was turning a 25 tempest with no problem.

No I haven’t, not sure how to check that. I don’t have a foot throttle or steering wheel trim just the old style hand control. After my 02 Classic which had the foot throttle and wheel trim I am finding it slightly harder going back to the hand lever control, just have to get used to it again.
I’ve also had quite a number of guys tell me the same thing about their P3″s between 99 and 03, are or were quite happy with the Tempest+ props but at the moment I’m not. No idea re the 23″ Fury 3 blade but hoping to get out tomorrow for short while to test?

I ask because it sounds like you have some other problem than the prop, and the most likely seem to be the throttle adjustment, or possibly a bad coil that would keep you from reaching your true top end. That 23 Fury should launch you out of the hole, and give excellent mid range, and if your engine is running right will come close to hitting the rev limiter, if not on it in a hurry as it would be near to equal to a 24 Tempest+.

I have NEVER heard of a prop needing 100 ft lbs. I would call Mercury 920-929-5040

@bwp777 That statement re prop torque at 100# came directly from Bass Cat Boat and they stated their rigging dept. does all theirs at the 100# torque rating – in general imagine almost all their props that go out are Fury, Tempest+, Trophy+ with Fury being the most? Not positive but some of the hub kits have a 2 piece “rubber” insert with the outside one being about 4″ long and then a conical stepped inside that one about 2″ long – I has seen quoted before and in last few days those use the 100# torque. My last Classic I had for 8 yrs. had 4 different props I put on but with that same type hub kit and after checking, I used the 100# torque on each when changed, taken off to clean, re-grease, etc.

I’ve ran a 26 fury on a merc 250 and now my yammy 300 and the manual for both is 45-55 if I remember correctly. I don’t recall the exact number but I know it wasn’t 3 digits long

Maybe last of this story re prop for this rig? Ran the 23″ Fury and at 3 1/2″ ptp got out of the hole quick, ended up at 5700 rpm’s and gps of 67. Now trim was only in 3rd of 10 digital positions and speed was increasing but due to 5 mph zones couldn’t wait for it to max out, had to shut down. I’m guessing speed would have hit at least 69 – 70 mph if a little more distance and raising trim a little more? No chine walk at that time and rooster tail maybe half way up toward top of cowling. Big difference that what it had been and able to fish some finally. A big THANK YOU to a member on here in my obtaining a 23″ Fury!!!!
