Changing Steering

I am gonna put a newer NFB steering system on my 94 Eyra. How hard is this gonna be? and how do I get the new cables fed back through the boat to the engine? or would I be better off to get my dealer to do it? Thanks, Larry

You can do it, its not that hard. You can tie a pull string to the cables at the engine and pull the steering cables out from the cockpit area. You can tie the new cables to the pull string and feed them back to the rear fairly easily. Replacing the helm is pretty straightforward if you have any mechanical ability at all. Just follow the instructions providded with the kit.

Thanks, thats what I thought, I wanted to make sure that there wasnt a great secret way to do it.

I would suggest only using mercurys ride-guide NFB steering if you can find one. They are far better than the rest, and are the only one that can be adjusted to zero-slop/zero-binding…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

I happen to agree. When I disassembled my first NFB helm to see how it worked, I thought “now why would I want something that is intentionally designed to bind?” I would normally say “seastar” is my choice, but I know you guys are not a fan of that either. I will add that to “go fast” I like pull-pull, but on a bass boat the people that fish with me would continually be tripping over the exposed cable. 2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

Push pull is the best system, though routing cables and getting to both sides is hard. So we all wind up with Push Push, or pull pull, depending on which way you are steering. As OT 57 pointed out, there are many reasons we do not suggest anti feedback systems. Just go back with a good cable system and lube it well with a heavy oil into the jacket before you install the cables. You will get many years out of a well lubricated and maintained cable system.
