Clear Coat Repair

I have some good sized scrapes in my clear coat. Just wear and tear stuff, but I am curious on what BCB recommends on getting that repaired. Also, any recommendations from owners would be cool too.- Chaz

We really leave this one to the Pros at BCB. We ourselves cant help much and it all depends on the style of damage as to how to go on the fix.

I have been studying this for awhile. I purchased a video on gel repair and have been doing a lot of reading. If the clear is over polyflake it depends if it has gone into the flake. You are suppose to be able to tell if the tips flake in the scratch are silver instead of the color of the rest of the flake. If this is the case it is much more involved than if it is not through the clear. I emailed the guy who made the video and he was nice enough to despond to me a couple of times. Use some aggressive compound to to scuff the inside of the scratch. Clean the scratch with acetone really really well. Apply clear gel coat with the tip of a toothpick fill the scrape a little above flush spray with parting fluid to allow gel coat to harden or they say you can put wax paper over the repair to remove the air. When repair has dried sand with 320 800 and 1200 wet sand paper to remove scraches. When you are satisfied with the look you should buff it twice first time with a fast cutting compound and then with a finishing compound. I am going to be getting into my repair soon. I will share info if you like. If anybody else has ant input or would like to correct any of this please feel free. I am no expert just sharing what I have seen and read.

NAPA carries a special wheel that you use on a drill. One type is for taking off the “fogging” effect on the newer plastic headlight lense; one for taking sand pits out of winshields; one for taking scuffs out of the clear coat on cars. I have used the one for headlights. Works great. Returned to factory finnish. Havent tried it on my CAT. Want someone else to try it first. This might be something BCB would want to experiment with. NAPA store says it will work for light scratches and scuffs. Dont want to be the first. Its not like sand paper. You put the wheel on a drill at verrrry low speed, dampen the pad and very lightly run it back and forth until satisfied. Gonna try it on my truck this week-end. Will advise.Martin

I want to add to my above reply that everybody has told me sometimes less is more when it comes to grinding and filling a small scratch. You should definitely try and buff or sand out scratches before going the gel coat route.

I said scrapes but I think gouges would be a better description. The guy at West Marine gave me some filler stuff, I will post brand and exact type when I get home from work. Also I am sending an email to BCB. Thanks for the input. – Chaz
