Control box

How do you replace the shifter control box on a 2003 Cougar FTD. I got the handle and front off, and loosened the hidden box. There is no way it fits through the hole. I assume it goes in before the cap and hull are joined together. Any suggestions.

The control box is installed after the cap is assembled, not before. The console does make removal more difficult. Some have removed the consoles, though every control box is installed after assembly, as are almost all other parts. There is an angle or configuration that allows removal.
