Cracks in transom

I am looking at a 1992 Pantera with a 97’ Evinrude 225. The boat was originally equipped with a 150hp mariner. I was told that the power trim went out on the 150 and the boat was hauled home with the motor trimmed all the way up. The result of that has cracked the top of the transom on both sides of the motor mount. The cracks do not go down the back or front yet, but figure they will. I’ve read different forums and read lots of different answers. I’ve never owned a glass boat before and don’t want to start off with big problems. I’m trying to find out if this would be a good reason to pass or if I should take the chance. I’m just a weekend fisherman so it’s not like it will be used daily but still don’t want problems reselling if or when I decide to upgrade or whatever. I will try to get some pics and post.

Is that thing actually rated for a 225? Every Pantera I have seen was 200 max.

I’m gonna say no. I don’t know for sure cuz I’ve never dealt with bass boats but I agree, the Pantera’s I’ve seen online all say max hp 200. The seller claims that the cracks were there before she had the 225 put on. I just want to know for sure if the cracks can be fixed or if I need to pass it by. I’ve read a lot of different forums and just about everyone I read say different about transom cracks. I’m gonna try and get in touch with bass cat this week and ask them. I’m leery about it but at the same time it’s in my price range if it can be fixed without breaking me.

I have a 95 pantera 2. When I bought it the transom was pretty soft. I called a buddy that works at a boat shop and he put a composite transom in it. It looks really good and I would say it will last forever.

I would have a reputable fiberglass shop look at your transom. If you can determine they are only spider cracks in the gel coat, with no structural damage to the transom or hull, then you will be fine. If there is damage, the cost of the repair may make the price of the boat vs value too far off balance. Never had a transom repaired, but from what I understand, it ain’t cheap. If you could repair it yourself you would save money. Best of luck!
