Detwiller Leaking….

Need to know what the warranty is on the Detwiller jackplates. I have one that I got on Mar of 06 and it looks like it is leaking at the seal for the position sensor. The fluid that is leaking looks like automatic trans fluid(red). Also how do you check the fluid in it. Thanks Chris

The original Detwiler design is one that we have been challenged with. The newer design with the 115 Mercury trim pump is reliable, though we are still left with several older ones in the field. The unit is a one year, though give Detwiler a buzz and see what they have to say. If you need more assistance, we will be glad to help. BCB

Be sure to check the long vertical cylinder bolts, (4) and make sure they are tight. If it has not already blown an O-Ring, this may be all you need ot do in order to save the plate. The bolts stretch and allow the upper and lower plates to move. And also, the company that now owns Detwiler is not the original owners. They are the third owners and are dong much better on design and build requirements. Though most Detwilers have already blown a seal if they are leaking. BCB

Yes, as we have posted on this board a few times before. You should check the stem bolts on all Detwiler plates with the older system. Just tension them tightly and you should be fine. Do not extend them all the way to the top, or all the way to the lower side to prevent stretching the bolts. The end hit is causing some of this. BCB

Just talked to Detwiler. Dale told me that the top seal is probably leaking. I tried to tighten the bolts up but they were already tight. He said a new seal kit is 19.95, but I think I am going to opt for the factory rebuild to the new design. That costs about $350 but gets rid of the 4 long bolts. I think once the seal starts leaking it will always leak to some degree. Just my 2 cents. Dale said it would take about a week once the factory gets it.

We apologize for any troubles you are having out of your Detwiler, and we think you are making a smart move in the upgrade to defer future issues on the plate. Unfortunately we are subject to other parts and pieces, at the mercy of those products and manufacturers, and their policies or issues. We have never been real fond of hydraulic plates as you probably know. Though we do think that the new Detwiler and the Bobs are the most reliable out there. Bobs is faster and has a better gauge. The new Detwiler is slower than Bobs, and thus more friendly to inexperienced hydraulic owners and the gauge is lack luster. BCB
