DFI Oil versus Premium Plus

What is the consensus on changing oil type from DFI (the brown oil) to premium plus in a 2005 Opti? Mechanic tells me Merc says its ok to do. If it is ok, what is the best method - drain and fill, or wait till theres about an inch or so of DFI in the tank and then fill with premium plus?
