Drilling into fiberglass

Tape off the area you are going to drill and let the bit do the drilling…in other words dont apply to much pressure to the drill. The masking tape will give you a good surface to keep the bit from walking and also helps from the gel cracking and chipping. Judd Lasiter

CC, I have had good luck when using a reg. quarter inch drill. Just make sure you tape the area before you drill. A few strips of painters tape works for me. Sure someone else may have other ideas, but good luck. pant 2 Bob

The drill bit is probably new and a whetrock on the very front chisel point will slick it up some. Just a couple of licks on the rock will do it. BCB

Tape over the spot. Then put the drill in reverse to get the hole started. Once the hole is going, put the drill in forward gear.

thanks, fellas. installing a powerpole. it will be attached to a nice stainless adapterplate that attaches to slidemaster jackplate. however, i got an extra foot control, and its gonna go somewhere up front, once i figure out exactly where to put it. happy thanksgiving, everyone! nothing like life in the south. limit of ducks in the morning, and a limit of reds and specks in the afternoon. the next day, same amount of ducks, but a limit of bass instead!

Mask area to be drilled with masking tape .one layer is good but 2 is better. Pick desired drill bit size. I always run drill in reverse with medium pressure for a few seconds. Drill clockwise holding light pressure to prevent hulling of fiberglass. Once hole is drilled used a countersink bit and counterbore hole to desired depth . The purpose of countersink the hole is as the screw starts in it prevents the gel from cracking This is just my technique. I do the same most the time but i have never counter sunk the hole and knock on fiberglass no cracks these boats are so thick every time i drill Im wowed

Drill slowly with a clean bit and use a counter sink bit to chamfer the hole always.
