Drilling Rod Box Lids Question

Ok guys. I am not real mechanical so I limit myself to what should be simple jobs. I want to add a new basscat bungee farther to the rear than standard velcro version so rods sit back further. Just tried to use the drill to screw down the bungee about 6 or 8 inches back from end of lid and next to font hinge. Problem is I am drilling into metal vs the deck so screw will not go in. Are the decks reinforced with metal? Could I be hitting the hinge somehow? If reenforced how do I know where I can drill? Boat is 2012 Eyra. HELP.

Ok. Just saw spec page that lists aluminum lids. I assume this is the issue. So should I just drill and bolt?

I drilled & screwed in from the bottom of my lid. Right in the brace where I knew it wouldnt go thru the lid. You might want to see if you can make sure you hit that brace.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods

I have a 14 eyra and feel your pain , i dont like the velcro either , too slow , thats prob the only thing i liked better on my triton were the retractable straps , the new caracal has them , way better ! Imo , and yes i would drill them and use the locking nuts and put some silicone in the holes to waterproof . Good luck

Thats my plan. I was hoping bcb might say the same to make feel better about drilling. Holes in the boat always makes me nervous.

As much as we would like to post, we would feel better if you seek some conversation. Mistakes are hard to draw back from on a boat.

http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/265 … OJaLvnF_0QThats the thread I did a while back on my work pack holder… You can see where I drilled & screwed my pieces in place from underneath the rod box lid, right in that brace.. where I knew there was enough meat/air space between the two, that I would not come up through the top of the lid. I think i am ok where i want to drill thru in terms of strength since metal shavings showed up when i tried to put the screw in originally. I just plan to drill and use ss bolts to attach.
