Assuming the bass boat is a purely American development, from the canoe to the inline seat models to my current 2013 Eyra, how did the steering come to be on the right as opposed to the left like our cars?? I assume there is a functional or physical purpose, just curious? Thanks. Linc W.
Propeller torque drives right and thus right hand steering developed.
Next question—-what effect than on the boats with center console steering? When they first appeared, I thought they would take over bass boat design. Instead, the idea flopped.
Little effect as most of these had hydraulic steering which had been developed. The torque on the engines was transferred to steering more in cable, drum drive and mechanical steering. Just like on tiller handles that torque one direction though hydraulic removes that pressure.
I always thought that the right hand steering was for handling and also to allow the driver to be closer to the bank to see obstructions while cruising. But, I really dont understand why the Center console design never took off. If done correctly to allow 2 wide seating and a walk up on each side to the front deck It is really functional. There is currently one manufacturer making a really nice center console bass boat that I think is a real winner except for the fact that it isnt a Bass Cat. Dont worry, Im not promoting any other brand, Im buying another BCB but Id be curious as to how much thought Bass Cat ever put into a Center Console design. Im sure BCB has played with the idea and elected against it for functionality reasons. Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
I always thought it had to do with mariners rules, I think boats(ships) are supposed to pass starboard to starboard when possible? Seems I read that somewhere because I have wondered the same myself.
Every boater should know the basic rules of the road. I am always amazed at how many dont. Here is good link that summarizes the basic rules – http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/122098tip.htm Knowing them may save your life and the life of your passengers.
( Head-On Situation, states that vessels which are approaching head-on shall alter course to starboard so each will pass port to port.) Back to school I guess….Thanks rlb8s
When I read the title I thought I was going to have to quote all of The Book of Gensis for you. Lol we, arent, monkeys. The center console bass boats always have looked a little funny to me. I actually came across one 2 days ago, big ole Z9. It was weird looking for sure. Just not a fan really. I guess just because its not “normal” 13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
