easy way to snake transducer cable to console 17 eyra

John Crews has some videos on setting up his newest Eyra.  Check them out on YouTube.  He used a stiff fiberglass snaking rod.

1. Remove the right rear vent.
2. Remove the throttle plate but leave all the cables and throttle attached.  Do not twist or bind any of them.
3. Lay the transducer on the ground on a towel or something soft.
4. Run the console plug up through or along the jackplate and into the boat through the boot where all the engine cables enter.
5. Fish the console plug in the boot until you can grab it from the vent hole.
6. Pull as much cable as you can up through the vent hole.
7. Attach the console plug to the end of a fish tape (or rods) using electrical tape.  Wrap it up completely and make it streamlined!
8. Fish the tape forward and along the right gunwale.  It might take a few tries and jiggling it around.
9. Check or have someone watch the opening where the throttle plate goes. Grab the console plug when it gets here.
10. Remove electrical tape and pull out fish tape from the back.
11. Pull a bunch of cable to the front.
12. Using your hands, fish the console plug forward and up to get it to the opening under the console.
13. Pull it through and plug it in.
14. Attach the transducer to the transom or jack plate etc.
15. Organize the excess cable with zip ties.
16. Button everything back up!

Steps 4 and 5 will be different if you are putting the transducer in the bilge.  In this case there is an opening in the bilge usually just under the boot to get up to the vent hole.

One last tip.  Wear a long sleeve shirt, light gloves and put duct tape over any raw fiberglass openings to prevent glass shards from entering your hands and arms!

This is the fish tape I use but rods work just as well.

If there is an old cable installed, do as himmelrr stated and remove the right rear vent.

Attach the old cable at the console to your fish tape or rods and pull it rearward. Once you get access to the Tape or rods, use the process mentioned above and pull the new cable to the console. I have always wrapped the connecting cable and fishing tape tightly with electric tape. I also put a dab of dishwashing detergent and spread it over the tape. Allows it to slide very easy thru other wires and cables.

My last Transducer replacement was pretty easy. I had torn the transducer off with the help of a stump. This just left the exposed cable. Attached the new transducer cable to the old, and pulled it to the console.

I cant stress this enough. Make SURE the cable is run properly from the mounting location outside the transom (JP routing or however your running it) to the vent area. If you run it incorrectly, the transducer will possibly keep you from rerouting in certain areas, and you will be pulling the cable back from the console to reroute.
