Faded paint on opti175 lower unit

why would the finish appear to have dulled after only two uses? Not the entire lower unit. Just a portion of it. I tried cleaning it with a wet cloth and it didnt come clean. I used some light boat soap and that didnt work either. Any ideas on what happened? It cant be normal.

I would assume that its around the waterline. Youre probably fishing somewhere that has some hard water and its leaving deposits. Vinegar and water will sometimes clean, some shower and bath cleaner for removing water spots will clean. Dont use abrasive cleaners unless you want to buff and wax. The best thing for water spots is to wipe the boat off as you remove it from the water at the boat ramp. Not tomorrow or next week as it gets tougher the longer it sets.

Floridaj, We will try all we can to help you learn on this new trip into the fast lane. Where is the abrasion? Lower skeg, around an oil screw, exactly where? It might be sand from that trip at Okeechobee, and it can also be picked up when powering on the trailer, as this set up will pick up plenty more trash than your previous 40 pony did. You are very concerned with your purchase,and you want to keep in polished like a chromed out Harley. Some of that will subside, and the anal side of us all will keep some of it. Floridaj, if the area that is dulling is the waterline or mid-section of the L/U, then Phil is exactly right. Clean that area ASAP when you pull the boat out. In our area, we have very hard water with a lot of limestone in our area and we are constantly battling this issue.Another little trick that I use is after I clean the mid-section, I spray it with some WD-40. That seems to help it look almost as good as new.

Shower sprays will work also, and not have that smell of vinegar. They are more expensive than the home remedy, and are spray on and drip dry.BCB

lost me there…I had a racing lower unit I ran for 10 years. I carefully sandblasted it to get rid of that slick finish that is not good for drag. I ran it bare aluminum with nary a problem. Not sure what the stress crack comment was about???2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

AJ is right…WD40 will do great on the mid section and it works real well on the trailer too. I just dont like the film it leaves in the water when you back the trailer into it Limeaway works well too. Just find what you want to use and use it everytime you take it out of the water and you dont have to deal with it…just like PA said.Judd Lasiter
