Fender replacement

BCB, Ive got the fender off as you suggested in an earlier post and for anyone who tries it you need to go ahead and buy a small propane torch to heat the adhesive so it will come off easily. My question is concerning the adhesive as it goes back on. Did you put any kind of primer on before you put the adhesive on? A friend gave me a tube of DOW U-428 Plus and it says it is a Urethane adhesive for windshields. However he didnt have any primer and I was wondering if that were a necessary step since it isnt being used to hold a windshield in a car without leaking. Can I use it alone to hold the fender in place if Ive cleaned the surface with acetone? thanks

You should not need the primer for this application. We are not trying to be water tight and it is not a structural part of the framework as in a windshield on a vehicle. BCB

4 minutes for feedback. Not bad. I appeciate the quick response. Now, I think Ill have enough time to finish installing it tonight make connections tomorrow and have plenty of time to be back on the water Saturday. You cant get that kind of help out of any owners manual nor most help lines. Thanks RJ

that the windshield is a structural part of todays vehicle. Especially uni-body vehicles. In addition of course with the SRS systems if the windshield is not properly installed in a vehicle when the air bag blows it could be the difference between life and death for the occupants of the vehicle…….You continue to impress me with your knowledge…Kudos….

Well… Heat to release the adhesive or a floor jack to press up on the old fender or both? We heat the steel plate with a torch or battery connected on a homemade thin wire saw to cut it free. The jack works for some and you can also drive a chisel or a scraper between the urethane Euroflex. Stubborn stuff! Makes us wonder every time how it ever comes loose on its own. BCB

Heat makes the job easy as pie ! If that stuff is bond you can jack the boat up with the fender . Ask me how I know ? Heat and a flat bar no problem .

Thanks for the tips. Ill use a cutting torch to heat it and a finish pry bar. I was just nervous to use a lot of force.

Just not a lot of direct heat and we like a propane torch to keep it within reason. BCB

Got It replaced. It took quite a bit of heat on the steal plates and a flat bar and hammer. Thanks for all the help. I may check on getting the old one repaired.
