You might want to switch from the velcro straps to the rubber bungee straps as a preference. The retractable type would require surgery on the boat and I would advise against that.
Another possible choice is another type of synthetic sea deck type flooring for the cockpit area, but that might be difficult to do on that model since there is some carpet on the vertical.
That is a good winter project and we sure have a lot of winter left!
