Found another reason for a Jackplate

I have an 04 Sabre with a 150 Mercury and no jack plate. I trimmed the motor up some and turned the motor the right which extended the steering cable right in to the side of the splash well and took a dime sized chuck out of the fiber glass. I was POed to say the least. Jack plate first and then a good fiberglass man.Just a heads up to other with a simular set up.ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud

I was hoping that with the motor 6 inches further back and the motor a little higher it would prevent the steering cable from hitting again.elwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud

Raising the motor is the only way to prevent this, or not trimming up too much if you have the motor lower. They have trim stop switches that can be installed to prevent this.Jason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!

Dweller,We opted for a bumper on the end of those steering kits. These sometimes were request to be left off and then the cables can impact the left splashwell on some set ups.You can put a guard or bumper on this to cover the issue. It will prevent further damage. The jack plate is more of an issue with the top of the transom.BCB

So what do I have to do to prevent the left side of the splash well or the top of the transom from being damaged? Sounds like a double edged sword.If I go 8 inches back I will run my self out of the garage. If you wanted to, you could add a 3″ plate to the boat. That would give you a little upgrade possibility for a B -day or Christmas package, though only if you have room for the 3″ add on. The bumper is just a rubber bumper knob that we bolted on to the splash well for preventing the cable end from impacting the splashwell knot. That area tends to be a bit protruded and can be impacted with the travel of later engines on cable steering.Elwood, you might also find a lubricator (pump) to lube that cable steering while it still works good. It will be preventive maintenance and should save you several hundred later. BCB

We would opt for a 3″ to keep some hole shot, though either will take care of this. The better top end would be a toss up and depend on your particular rig? BCB

I have never seen a 3 inch but have seen a 4″, 5.5″ and a 6″.Not doubting your word, just never seen one.If the 6 inch will cure my problems then that is what I will do. I will still be inside the garage with the six. Looking at the Slide Master or the Detwiler. I have played with the hole shot and right now it takes less than a 1/4 of the throttle to get out of the hole so I have some to play with. If I hammer it I catch air. LOLBiggest question is…..will I cure the problems with a 6 inch jack plate?ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
