Is there a secret to filling up? I have to go really slow or else I get a “gas bath” no to mention the splash running down the side of my boat! Besides, nowadays that stuff is too precious to spill. Pantera Classic….
What octane do most of you run? Mercury 200hp EFI
You need to make sure the angle of the pump matches the angle of the hose inside the boat not to give the fuel any resistance while filling up or you will wear it. If I turn the pump I will get some back splash but if I keep it going right into the tank I am good. Also, don’t fill it all the way up leave some room in the tanks for expansion.
Running anything more than 87 is wasted $. Buy some Merc Quickleen and run it w/ 87 octane and you are as good as you can be fuel wise.
Judd Lasiter
87 oct.
I have found that I need to have the nozzle pushed as far in the hole as I can get it, and as staight up and down as it will go then i can fill at normal speed, if it is not in all the way or is at an angle then it will splash back and turn the pump off, took awhile to figure out exactly where the nozzle needed to be, and it is differnt for all three of my tanks.

Thanks……
87 & Quickleen it is! Would you still run seafoam at a rate of 1 oz./gallon with the quickleen?
200 EFI 2.5L

Quickleen and Seafoam serve the same purpose. I don’t claim to know what the differences are so I won’t pretend to. Merc recommends their oil and their addivites so that is what I use.

OK!
Time to come clean here!
This would be a pre- 2007 model, with late 2006 models in this category. Fuel Splash Back is very common on models prior to this. Less so, on the older P3 models and the customary BCB rear tank installations. Though it is very common on the belly tank installations and similar installs. This goes for the entire marine industry.
In the early 2000 years we figured out how to stop splash back on filling, though not what would be used to do so. We visited with Moeller (tank Mfg.) and others trying to create a solution that was cost effective, and we were the only company we know, that was aggressively trying to solve this issue. That was from conversations with hardware companies and the tank company. Though we wanted to put this one behind us. Your car does not do it until you top it off, and your boat shouldn’t either. We were driven to resolve this.
We tried aluminum custom built collector boxes, custom fill caps, alterations to the vents, hoses that connected to the station nozzles, and more… Carbon Filters were thought about, and different catch catch cans and more… Aluminum necks to the tanks, and more…
It was many, many hours of thoughts, a couple of trips to different companies such as Moeller, Perko and others, some R & D parts and more. All knew the issue existed, though none had a suggestion for a fix? All were puzzled and none had any idea how to resolve this efficiently.
So we did!
It just came to us one day in passing, as good ideas usually do, they just come on like a blinking light.
We should not have that problem the past couple of years. It was a mid season change we made, and we informed the dealerships of the alteration at the last dealer meeting (“Excellence In Action 2008”) in August. We have not previously informed folks of how the “fix” works, to keep it in house at BCB. Our competition has the same issues and we have it figured out.
The fix is a very simple no brainer part, that just has to be tweaked for the installation. We modify them here, and insert them in new boats now, in all tank necks. It is a part as simple as an open ended shotgun shell. A simple red plastic insert that we cut out one end.
If any of you would like to insert the alteration, we would be glad to provide the part at No Charge. There is no warranty on insertion of the part, as it was not designed in previous years, and has been a common issue on various boat brands. It can be documented on many brands and on many boards.
We have been hesitant to openly discuss the “fix” as our competition would immediately figure it out and have the same resolution. We are giving away a bit of hard research, though a simple solution.
We will post how to acquire the part in a few days, for those who desire to do so. The fix will only apply again to most boats prior to 2006 model year.
Our thoughts now are for a request with your serial number, and an envelope with a self addressed stamped envelope. We would send the part right out to you. No Charge. The install is simple new, though more difficult for after market as you must access the tank nozzle filler tube.
We want to make this as easy as possible, though we want these going to BCB Owners.
Look for more info. Also look for some warm weather warnings to come.
